Why can't the doctors tell me the cause of her low platelets?

The cause is that antibodies have gone mad and are killing off the platelets by mistake. It could be triggered by a virus that looks to an antibody like a platelet so they get confused or something else. Other times these things just happen. Knowing what the trigger was won't help.

The "cause" is different for everyone, so there isn't a known cause. It's more like a trigger - sometimes something triggers an autoimmune response, like an antibiotic or an illness. Sometimes, it just happens. It's like when someone is diagnosed with MS or cancer....you don't really know why you have it.

Some people are predisposed to autoimmune disorders, meaning that it's herediary in a way. Do you have any autoimmune disorders in your family? Asthma? Lupus? MS? Anything like that?
