I have had ITP for 10 years and have been on N-plate for 7 years. I haven't had a flu shot for 4 or 5 years and and want to get one this year. Would that be ok? I know my platelets may go down but will they go back up after my N-plate shot which I get once a week? Don't want to risk getting the flu but don't know if it's the right thing to do!

Sunshine why not call or email & ask your hematologist - we can't tell you if it is the right thing or ok for you. We can tell your our experience though. I have had a flu shot yearly since 1992 with no platelet problem, I was diagnosed in 1989 - however, the only treatment I was on would have been one IV of Win-Rho and I don't even recall if it was during flu season. Got my flu shot last week.

My current hematologist said I should get the shot but my former doctor said I shouldn't. That's why I'm confused!

if you have been on Nplate for 7 years how often to you receive the injection? I have been getting them every week for the past couple of months after having been diagnosed this past July. They check my platelet level before each injection. About a month ago my level was near 400 so my hemo decided to skip that weeks injection. Then this past week I decided to skip a week on my own to see what effect it would have since my last platelet level was around 200. I cant imagine having to get these injections for so long

Sunshine do you trust your current hematologist?

I started getting the N-Plate shot every two weeks and for the last 3 or 4 years it's been every week. Mine have never been up to 400 and only a few times up to 200. I get a blood count before each one also. I have no side effects from it just a little worried what it might do with a flu shot.

I didn't trust my previous hematologist and switched just this past year. He seems to know what he's talking about and doesn't seem concerned about the flu shot. He says it's necessary right now and even gives it to his patients who are going through chemo. I, personally don't trust too many doctors nowadays!

I have a flu shot every year and have never had a drop in my count.
I would still have it even if it did affect count.
A temporary count drop is preferable to having flu. Once was enough for me. I never want to go through it again.
