I am (or at least I thought) I was a healthy 29 yr old female. I went to a gyn appt where they took blood and my platelets came back at 46,000. They repeated the test and it was 52. I went to my GP who tested again. And they were at 43. Now I’m being referred to a hemo and I am scared to death. All of my other blood work has been perfect... just really low platelets. Any advice or comfort? I am scared, I have a husband and a 3 year old child. This whole thing has made my anxiety go through the roof.

Dont worry , low platelets might be ITP or even might be a temporary thing due to any medicines you had taken, that is what my doctor said - even environmental toxins might cause a drop in platelets temporarily . Even if you get diagnosed with ITP there are treatment options , everyone here is soo helpful they can provide you with more info . My platelets are in the 40000 range and I am just somehoe managing without treatment for now.

  • ITP since 2014. Retired nurse. My belief is empower patients to be involved as much as possible in their care. Read, read, read & ALWAYS question medics about the evidence base they use.

Try not to worry. Latest guidelines recommend watch and wait if count is above 30k

I am currently at 45,000 without any medications or any symptoms. I have been being followed for close to two years. I was recently diagnosed with ITP after changing hematologists at MGH. I am hoping that I can continue without any treatment and stay active. It is scary at first, especially when there is no diagnosis. I went twenty months w/o diagnosis and had many blood tests as well as a bone biopsy with no answer. Now that I know that I have ITP, I feel better knowing what I have.

I went to my first hematology appt on Tuesday and they did a million blood tests. I can only see a hand full of my results in the patient portal. Do you know exactly what blood tests were done? I’ve had three CBCs before my hematology workup.

It is scary not to know what's happening. Hopefully, your doctors can provide some more info for you soon and reading here makes you feel a bit less worried.
