My daughter was diagnosed with chronic ITP when she was 8 yrs old, she is now 22 and a RN. She is starting a new position as a RN in a children's hospital's emergency room. She was cleared to work but advised to get the Varicella, TDAP and HEPB for her on safety. My understanding all along was she could not get the shots because of her ITP. Her hematologist said it's up to her but advised us that it could drastically drop her platelets, or maybe not affect them at all. She takes 50mg of Promacta every day and is at a level of 190. She wants to get the vaccines but I am a nervous wreck and very confused on what she should do. Please help . any thoughts on this would be very much appreciated. Thank You very very much

Your daughter is an adult, not to mention an RN - I'm sure you are very proud of her!!
I would think she will do what is best for her - you need to trust her.

Good luck to her in her new position!

  • ITP since 2014. Retired nurse. My belief is empower patients to be involved as much as possible in their care. Read, read, read & ALWAYS question medics about the evidence base they use.

I agree with Mel that she must make her own decision.
I have just retired as a nurse. I regularly needed hep B vac boosters as I could never maintain adequate levels. My haemo positively encouraged me to do so. It had no effect on my counts.
Did she have chicken pox as a child if so why give varicella? Surely she had TDAP vac as a child.

Thank you for your reply, Im sure she will do whats best for her. She had 1 varicella when she was 1 and DTAP at 9 weeks 17 weeks 6months 16 months and 4 yrs old. We were advised not to get the last one at 11 yrs old because of her ITP. She just did a whole bloodwork up for her new job and came back that her varicella titer results is negative and hepatitis B is non reactive

I had the hep B vaccination for a nursing type job and it completely wrecked my blood with low platelets and neutrophils. The neutropenia righted itself after 6 months. Also the jabs didn't work anyway as a blood test showed. But most don't have those problems so you just make a decision and hope.
