What is the real number? 140 or 150 was created by VJL1979
Good Evening Everyone,
So I have to get a root canal and at my,
last visit my count was at 129. I went to my PCP for clearance and he wants to do another CBC to make sure I am over 100. When I got myblood work 3 months ago, he said by looks of numbers there is nothing that indicates problem with Bone Marrow. WBCs and other, bloods were in range. He said if your still at 129 or below you will goto Hematologist. At my visit when I met with him,he said, nothing to,be concerned, about and, that if you come, back 129 or,higher Ill see you for, your next physical. Now after this visit he said I will goto Hematologist if its the same,or,not, above 150. That could just be your number. Now my mind is,everywhere. What if it comes, back lower and I,have to goto Hematologist? What will he do? Ive heard of bone marrow biopsies and to,be honest that is last thing,I want to do,before, holidays. I have no,bruising, petechaie and when I,have gotten a cut it stops as it always has. I have great energy, training for a 10k. Just looking for some place I can get advice and reassurance. Nervous about results.

Hello,
While most people walk around with 200,000 platelets, it's safe to do minor surgery at levels above 30,000 and 'regualr' surgery at levels above 60,000 or so. With anything over 100,000, there is no concern over you bleeding out and i highly doubt anyone would ever order a bone marrow biopsy with such a high number. The hematologist will probably ask you some questions about your health history and current symptoms, and possibly give you some personalized advice, although, again, at over 100,000 platelets, and with no other significant findings or symptoms, I doubt anyone, especially a hematologist, would be too concerned. I don't think you have anything to lose by consulting one, but I also don't think you should worry at all.

Yeah. This time he is also doing MPV I guess. He said he is not worried and nothing to be super concerned about.

Platelet counts fluctuate constantly. You would probably get two different numbers if you had CBC's two hours apart. ITP isn't even diagnosed with a count over 100,000, and any number above 30,000 is generally considered to be safe for daily life. Try not to stress about it.

Bone marrow biopsies are not needed to diagnose ITP. They are generally only done if the patient is over 60 years old or if they have very low counts and do not respond to treatment.

If anyone wants to do a bone marrow biopsy, please get a second opinion. You are totally fine with those counts. I have had ITP for 9 years with counts as low as 1, and never needed a bone marrow biopsy. ITP can be diagnosed from a CBC. If your other CBC numbers are normal and only the platelets are off then its not a big deal, platelets just a bit low. As Sandi said, platelets fluctuate all the time. I got my wisdom teeth pulled with a platelet count of 50 and clotting was normal. Some of us on the forum feel that stress, illness or vaccines lowered their counts, but really its hard to say with platelets. Just have fun, be healthy and enjoy the holidays!
