Hello all,

I have a bit of a weird question, and I think the answer will be difficult to determine but can't hurt to ask...

Does anyone know how quickly a platelet count can drop when ITP is triggered...either from a virus or possibly a vaccine?

For example: If you have a count of150 (approx), and then you're exposed to EBV (or another virus that can trigger ITP), is the platelet count drop instant or is it more of a gradual decline? any help/info/research would be appreciated...thanks!

With ITP, it is unpredictable. From what I have been reading, it could be slowly over a course of couple months or in a matter of hours. For my son, he was 263K on Friday and dropped to teen by following Monday.

  • I developed hemolytic anemia in 1999 and ITP in 2005. Treatments have been splenectomy, prednisone, IVIG, and Rituxan.

It is really different for everyone. For me if I am 365K one day 2 days later I can be at 4K. Some people can stay at a lowish level say 50K and continue to keep that count over months without treatment. For me, if I am at 50K I know I need to treat as I will be down to 0 the next day.

When you say "triggered," do you mean the initial presentation of ITP? I think many on here have no idea when they first developed ITP, because they weren't already getting regular CBCs. Many, like my daughter, develop sudden bruising or petchiae, and learn they have a low platelet count. In her case, we could only find one prior count, done for a medical procedure earlier that year. She'd been so healthy, we had skipped the CBC for the annual school sport physical because she was needle-shy. If you mean going from a safe count to terribly low, once she was getting regular CBCs, we could count on seeing a lower number almost immediately if she developed a cold virus. Some others on here have said their counts actually rose in response to illness. It's probably too wildly varied to count on anyone else's experience. I tried keeping a chart for the first year, but the numbers were really all over the place, with little correlation to anything.
