Hi all. So I,recently had a physical. I am 38 years old. My Dr called me and said there was an abnormal result regarding platelets. I am at 120,000. This is my first physical in years. Now I am understanding the reason for yearly checkups so you have a baseline. Anywho, I do not have bruising or trouble clotting up after a cut. However, after reading up in low platelets I see that Cancer could be a cause. Then they talk of bone marrow biopsies and all this stuff. I think the worst thing I could have done was google. It is literally the root of all evil. My red and wbc came back normal so I am hoping all is ok. Just wondering what I should expect when I revisit with him. I honestly feel great, other than,the anxiety of wondering what is going on. If anyone could shed some light on what I should expect it would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, VJ, welcome!
First of all, 120 is a good number! A little low, but still good. Personally speaking for myself, I wouldn't worry. And yeah, googling is definitely is a bad thing! I did the same thing when I was first diagnosed.

Your count is just slightly below normal, nothing to worry about. ITP is usually diagnosed when a count is consistently below 100,000. Many things can cause a count to drop temporarily such as an antibiotic, an illness or a vaccine. I'd be surprised if the doctor does anything. All that he should do is monitor your counts every few months or just ask you to watch for symptoms of bruising or bleeding. That usually doesn't happen unless a person is under 20,000 or 30,000. At this point, you don't have anything to worry about.

Thanks for response. I read that Leukemia could be a cause for low platelet count and that freaks me out a bit. Again, I went to Google and then stopped after reading because I am sure there are a million things that can cause a lower count. I go on Thursday for a follow up.

Thanks. Yeah, on,google it said Leukemia could be a cause and that freaked me,out a bit. So I stopped because I am sure there are a million reasons why it could happen. I go Thursday for follow up, so,hopefully he just says lets monitor and see.

Please don't freak yourself out with Google. Usually with leukemia, there are physical symptoms and a problem with white counts. Your platelets are not low; they are slightly below normal. In all of my years here (20), I have never seen even one case of leukemia due to an abnormal platelet count when all else was normal.

Thanks for the reply. This is just a shock to me. Generally speaking, I feel great and do not get sick often considering I work with middle schoolers. Yes, Google can drive you nuts, but it led me to this site. Just have to stay positive because nothing I can do until Thursday anyway.
