Hi everyone!

My doctor did my CBC and found my Platelet count to be 141 000 and my Immature platelet count to be 11.9. (INF%)

She thinks I have ITP.... we did a second blood test 2 days later and my platelet count is 151 000.

I am so confused.... do I have ITP or did I just have a blip in my body and perhaps fought off a cold I didnt know about? Also had my period so not sure if that made a difference. My cbc in 2013 said I was at 161 000 and my 2014 cbc put me at 202 000.

So I am beyond confused.... anyone else in a similar situation?

Hi :)
141k is surely not low enough for a diagnosis, I'd say it's a blip. The lab where i get my cbc done puts the normal platelet range between 140k and 450k... try not to worry! you can have brain surgery even at 100k. Check your platelets in a couple of months and watch for symptoms like bruising and petechiae to see in which direction they're moving.
Best of luck!

Hi, I don't know about IPF, but 141k and 151k are not cause for concern. If it were to drop from 141k, it would warrant monitoring. What kind of doctor (specialist) said this to you? It sounds a bit alarmist.

I think a visit to a hematologist would reassure you.

Oh wow. I thought the most recent guidelines were that you wouldn't have any diagnosis of ITP unless your counts are below 100 000 (100k). 141k and 151k sound pretty well in the range of normal to me. I would definitely not worry and wouldn't do anything unless you are suddenly having lots of bruising, bleeding, or other symptoms. Your counts are really nothing scary, please don't worry.

Viruses and infections can cause counts to drop. If that isn't the cause, this might just be your 'normal'. That's okay though, because it is above the guidelines for an ITP diagnosis. Counts consistently under 100k are needed for that. Your doctor seems to be really jumping the gun here. 141 and 161 are pretty much the same. Counts fluctuate constantly. Your counts are great!

Thank you so much.

She says that because my immature platelets are so high it means something is killing my mature platelets.

I'm praying it is just a virus because we have had such a terrible year... our family has been devastated by so many horrible conditions, I cant handle another one added on our plate right now....

You are all heroes and I respect you all so much. I'm just so afraid of another life changing diagnosis...

Nooo....that's not necessarily what that means. If your platelet counts were actually low, that theory might make sense. But your count is still in normal range and that's what matters. Honestly, doctors don't worry unless the count is below 20k. We have all found that ER doctors and GP's are fairly uneducated about ITP and tend to over-react. It's not worth worrying about unless your counts drop further and stay down. I'm talking about a steady drop like 140, 115, 75, 40...etc. If you see 151, 140, 137, 142, etc....you're good!

Worst case scenario: ITP can be life-altering at first but I assure you, it's usually manageable and life goes on.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Truly. These counts have been pretty constant for me. They were 161 in 2013... then 202 in 2014, then 141 in 2018 and a few days later 151.

I'm hopeful. Maybe my platelets dont live as long. O.o ot infection or virus.... I'll have to check them again in a few months perhaps and see if anything is happening.

God bless you <3
