I was diagnosed with itp in November 2016, i had taken 90mg of prednisone everyday for about 1 month couldn't get my number up past 50. So i chose to have the splectmony removal done. Numbers were at 480 when i had them checked in September.
I just have this fear that the numbers will drop, can anyone tell me how long they went when they had their spleen removed if their itp came back?

Thanks,
Amanda

Amanda:

It's different for everyone. Sometimes counts never drop but sometimes it can be after a few weeks, months or years. Sometimes counts will drop after an illness, medication or vaccine. Sometimes they rebound and sometimes they don't.

Didn't your doctor suggest any other treatments before recommending splenectomy? That was awfully fast.

Try not to spend time worrying about it. If it happens, there are a few other options to try.

Like Sandi said, results vary. I had my splenectomy in 2006 and it worked for a month/month and a half.
I hope yours lasts a long time.

I had my spleenectomy in February of 2016. I made it a year and a half without a relapse. On the upside I expected to be sick all the time and I've managed to not even have a cold!

Splenectomies don't really cause a person to get sick more often. The problem is that if you are exposed to certain bacteria, it can become serious very quickly.

I'm sorry to hear that, it happens often. What treatments have you tried?
