What is everyone's opinion on the need to wear or carry an alert bracelet?

My daughter had ITP as a teen. (She entered remission over two years after diagnosis.) I made her wear a bracelet, especially while traveling or playing sports. Even nurses in the ER were unsure what ITP was, so her bracelet said "Bleeding risk - low platelets - ITP."

  • ITP since 2014. Retired nurse. My belief is empower patients to be involved as much as possible in their care. Read, read, read & ALWAYS question medics about the evidence base they use.

You have ITP and are on steroids. I think you should be wearing one. I've had my SOS talisman round my neck since the very early days of my diagnosis.

I stopped wearing mine when I went into remission. It had: ITP; on Prednisone; TMJ disease and under Thyroid. If the time comes that I have to wear it again, I'll have to make revisions to it. The Canadian Medic Alert has a watch that I want.

I wear one, with "low platelet count" on it since few healthcare practitioners seem to know what ITP or even thrombocytopenia is. I also make sure that my chart and pharmacy information notes the problem.

Pretty cool looking options, even dog tag option if you don't want the bracelet.

I have been wearing a Medical alert ID bracelet for approximately 6 years since I came down with ITP. I would not go anywhere without it. It has my name, bleeding disorder, low platelets, and I.T.P. on it.

Every morning I put my Medical ID bracelet and watch on automatically. It is a nice looking piece of jewelry which was costly when purchased. It gives so much peace of mind.

I do not have a medical alert. When I was diagnosed I was a single mom with 2 kids could not afford.

When my daughter grew up and was working she bought me an Italian charm medical alert bracelet. So I have medical alert charm and on either side is a charm that is engraved one says ITP the other says Asthma then one more charm has my name engraved on it.

Like Lady Elly said I auto put watch and bracelet on daily. In the beginning it wasn't auto I'd forget sometimes. Now when I leave for work I actually have to grab each wrist to confirm because I don't always notice they are there!

There is also an ice app for iPhones- you can enter your platelet count, emergency numbers etc on your
Lock screen so people don't need the code to your
Phone. If you want you can register it with 911 so they know your #, address, diagnosis, and risk level.

Just diagnosed this November and one of the first things I did was order one. Mine says ITP , Blood type and NKA (no known allergies) thought it was a no brainer. Saves time because all your medical information is instantly accessible through a code. The EMS/hospitals can call the 800# give the code # and all my meds/medical history/ surgical history/ contact info is on my profile. As a nurse, I am aware of how treatment comes to a grinding halt until questions can be answered. My vote.....get one and the sooner the better.

Jane.brandi,
I did not think of having blood type put on my medical alert bracelet, but that is a great idea.

I am not sure about the code that EMS and hospitals can call to get a patients profile. How does it work? Is it some code that is put on the medical ID bracelet?

Thanks.

On my bracelet, I have an ID number. That could be what jane.brandi is talking about.

Good idea about blood type! I can put ICE on my phone too, just haven't gotten around to it.

I went with the dog tag ID from the link I shared above. It is with me anytime I leave the house now. You can customize them with any information you want, pretty cool company.

Yes, on the back of the bracelet there is an 800 phone number and there is also a long number on your bracelet, when the EMS call the 800 number and give the code it will link all the info that you have put online. don't forget to put your doctors contact numbers and your insurance info too. Saves SO much time in an emergency.
