Hair falling out after steroids was created by Zentoons
I was diagnosed with Itp in May. I was put on 100 mg of prednisone for weeks and then tapered off. It took 3 taperings to get it right.
But my platelets finally stabilized around 190. I started with a count of 5. I have been off of steroids for about 6 weeks. But I now find that my hair is falling out, I am not bald but the hair is getting much thinner and all my joints hurt when I get up in the morning. Has anyone else had these experiences once off the steroids?

Yes, hair loss and stiff joints are very common side effects of tapering. It takes a while to stop feeling the withdrawal.

I am new here, but hear you pain. I too was diagnosed recently in April. lupus. I did the 80mg dose for a month then a slow taper. Platelets got back to 258. A week ago my platelets dropped again. But I also noticed my hair falling out. I was not sure if it was from flaring Lupus or what
but it never fell like this before so I also was suspect of the high dose pred or even the ITP which I am not real familiar with.
So big question how much will it fallout? If I have to keep on the high dose and tapering can I lose my hair all together? Is there anything I can do? I went to my salon and had a good trim and bought some more expensive conditioners thinking it might help. Sandy Too

You have to figure out if it's actually falling out or breaking. It's hard to tell. I think I have both going on. Biotin is supposed to be the best thing to help hair. I take that and sleep with coconut oil in my hair twice a week, plus use two different oils when drying and styling it. It helps some. I tried expensive shampoo and conditioner and it didn't help at all. I'm going to have to look into Rogaine or something because it's been going on for 5 months. I have a lot more hair on one side of my head than I do on the other.
