ITP relapse + joint pain

ITP relapse + joint pain was created by aniamaja
Hi all,
had my first bout of ITP about three years ago. Responded well to prednisone and was fine until last week when i realized that pesky bruise that would not go away was likely "it" again. Then the petechiae started last weekend and so I've done a blood panel yesterday and i am at 15k and seeing a doctor in a couple of hours.
What's new this time is persistent joint pain - not severe, but very persistent - knees and hips plus tired/tense muscles in my calves with occasional swelling in the ankles. I initially attributed it to walking a lot on my vacation and a long flight but it's been three weeks and it's still here.

Does anyone have experience with having chronic joint pain/muscle aches while having ITP?

Thanks,
Ania

It seems the joint pain preceded the ITP symptoms. Were you taking ibuprofen or other NSAIDs for the joint pain? They can trigger drug-induced thrombocytopenia purpura.

Otherwise, it is not uncommon for multiple autoimmune coditions to be affect the same person, and if enough criteria are met, it could be lupus, so that is one possibility to explore with your doctor.

Or, there could be no connection between the symptoms, and if you take a course of prednisone your joint pain might disappear as well.

Rob, i am not sure if it preceded ITP or just the visible symptoms of ITP. I got that bruise right around the day the pain started i just didn't initially think much of it.
Regardless, I didn't take any drugs for it. It's more of a strain sensation than pain really. My doctor seemed to be more into the deep vein thrombosis route, so waiting on some blood test to rule that out.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

ANia:

How long has that been going on? A few days, a few weeks?

If it doesn't go away, you might want to look into a Rheumatological workup.

Hi Sandi,
Didn't notice your reply till now. The pain/strain went away after a few days after some committed stretching when a minor back ache manifested itself, prompting me to think it was "a trapped nerve" kind of issue.
It's been gone for more than a week so fingers crossed.
