I think it is rare that prednisone is a cure for ITP. For many it is a rescue drug if platelets drop to a dangerous level or it is used while you are trying to find something that might get you to safe level or into remission. I was on it for 6 horrible months. How long have you been taking it?

If it were a cure, it might be worth it. It's not. It can give some people a remission but the length of it may not be very long.

How long have you had ITP? You said it's chronic...what other treatments have you tried?

You won't be diabetic for life. The glucose level will come down as you taper off the steroid. If it doesn't work to get a remission then there are other things to try.

mrgoofy:

I was diagnosed in early May...gave in as my count kept falling and took Pred (65mg) late June. I've been trying to reduce for a month now and am stuck at 25mg. I will only take a lower dose (thinking around 30mg) another time, because it is exhausting trying to manage the side effects of the drug as well as the withdrawal. At this rate I 'may' be off by Christmas.
At least it has been a break from bruise watching etc. and we know I respond to steroids for now. But to be honest that's likely to be all any of us get out of this journey... from all I hear.

Advice for the side effects, online here, has been invaluable, as well as all the wider info from people much more knowledgable than I am.

Wishing you an easy ride with it!

20 mg's isn't too bad. You can talk to your doctor about other treatments if Prednisone gets to be too much.
