My husband was diagnosed last year with ITP. Since he's done Prednisone, Azathioprine, Rituxan, and IVIG's. He is still on Azathioprine, and we are in the process of scheduling more IVIG's. His last platelet count was 25.

Our daughter has her 5 year checkup tomorrow, and I think she is do for some shots. I had read an article where people on immunosuppressants should avoid people that have had a "live vaccine" for a week. We will not get the flu shot, but the other vaccines I think she needs.

Any input?

Catlyn,

It wouldn't hurt to verify with your husband's hematologist. I have had ITP for 25 years and received various treatments for 19+ years. I don't remember any warnings like this from my DR/parents growing up around other children.

Best of luck!
Tim

I am on imuran (azathroprine) for anither medical issue and yes, my Dr was very clear I could not be around my children after live vaccines. They did not say a specific timeline as I believe it depends on the vaccine how long they shed it for. Lucky for me I had to travel for work for a week last summer and my husband took my daughters to get "caught up" at the beginning of the week. An odd situation for sure!

MMRV is a live virus vaccine that is given at 4-5yo. In the office where I work we try to split the vaccines in between the 4 and 5yo check ups so the child does not have to get hit with all of them in one visit (not always possible). I would check with both your husbands hematologist and the pediatrician for advice. The CDC website also has information on vaccine administration which may address this and possibly the American Academy of Pediatrics. I know that there are certain chemo regimes where caution is required if a family member is getting live virus vaccines.
