Out of a Doctor

After my blood tests two weeks ago, we found out my platelets went back up to a 32. They also did a PFA test- the hospital told my mother that the machine malfunctioned and they weren't able to get a result, but the doctor called my mom a few days later and told her about the results (all she told me is that they aren't functioning properly). That being said, it seems like the doctor and my mother got into an argument. She wanted to pull me out of school this week for an IVIG, when my mom refused, the doctor dropped me as a patient. So I have no doctor and no way to check how I'm doing. My mother set up an appointment with a neuropath for next month. Has anyone else seen a neuropath about this? And should I be worried about not having a doctor?

P.S. I do research, but I find the response of those in my situation to be more reassuring.

Brenna:

I think seeing a Neuropath is fine, but you should also be monitored occasionally by a doctor at the same time. I'm not sure that a Neuropath can order a CBC to check a platelet count or deal with getting counts up quickly if the need arises.

You do have a right to refuse IVIG and the doctor can drop you as a patient for not following medical advice, but there are ways to discuss treatment options with a doctor and compromises can be made. It's a shame that didn't happen in your case.

A count of 32k is usually a safe count, but if you do have platelet function problems, then a count like that might not be as safe for you as it would be for others. My suggestion: Keep an eye on your symptoms and if you start to have bleeding, seek medical help yourself if you can't get help from your family.

Brenna, did you mean to say naturopath rather than neuropath? I don't remember you mentioning any neurological issue.

Probably. My mom has been calling it a neuropath- I never caught on.
