About these "blood rashes"... was created by brennamadi
Before I was diagnosed I got the purpura rashes from time to time, but it was before we found out my count was low. When the counts went up, the rashes weren't around. That being said, I have a rash on my chest, lightly arounf the inside of my elbow, and little pricks on my wrist, thigh, and foot. Should I be worried or is it common for them to just show up or is it something like a warning sign? I was just diagnosed a little over a month ago and don't know a lot about the disease or what comes with it. :( Any help would be appreciated.

If you do indeed have petechiae, it could mean that counts are down. Petechiae is not a rash; it is caused by small bleedings in the capillaries. It is flat, comes in clusters and does not itch.

If you think it is petechiae, you should probably schedule a CBC.

I think you should have a CBC done to check your count.

I like the quote in my signature:
"Instead of wasting your time worrying about symptoms, just get it checked out." -Nieca Goldberg, MD

Hope you find your count is good!

Experience is a great teacher. A petechial rash is sometimes associated with a very low platelet count, and other times is found in a low (but safe) platelet count. Only by having a few CBSs and talking over the results with your treating doc(s) will you know what's going on. I had regular platelet counts at the start of my ITP because of my tendency to bruise, though it turns out I just bruise easily.

Aoi:

I'm confused. How could you have normal counts at the start of ITP? ITP can only diagnosed when counts fall below 100k.

I used "regular" to mean "repeated" or "frequent," and not to mean "in the normal range." I guess I should have simply written "a lot of."

So I went for my CBC today and my platelets dropped from a 48 to a 23, the lowest they've been. On Friday I will be going to Tyler for another CBC, a second opinion, a platelet function test, a couple tests to see if I can take a drug, sadly I can't remember the name of it, and a possible blood marrow exam. They're starting to push the IVIG but my mom and I are refusing, at least for the time being. One thing that a nurse told me was that she and the doctor looked at my blood smear and they said my platelets are really tiny. She thinks it's possible that the machine just isn't picking them all up. I really don't want to do an IVIG and not need it. Has anyone heard anything about extremely small platelets? They said they hadn't and it's a bit confusing...

That is unusual because most people with ITP have large platelets. Platelets shrink as they get older. People with ITP are known to have platelet fragments, but they usually aren't found on a blood smear (too small). I think I'd try to get some answers from that second opinion.

There is a genetic disorder that causes small platelets, but it affects only males. Brenna is a female name?

Yes, I'm a female. The doctor and nurse said that they hadn't seen anything like it. I've tried to do some research, but it all brings me back to ITP. At first I was wondering if I was misdiagnosed but maybe small platelets can be a factor in ITP? Friday I'm going for testing so we'll hopefully get answers then. Also, at my appointment, my WBC was 2.5 and everything else had gotten higher. They also think my temp runs high- it was at 99.5 yesterday and the time before that 99.3.

Do you have a link to any site that explains that disorder or do you know what it is?

I couldn't find much on small platelets either, except for Wiskott-Aldrich. That isn't possible though.

Small platelets are not usually found in ITP as I said earlier. Since they are large when they are new, the body destroys them before they get older and smaller. Small platelets would seem to indicate a production problem. Most people with ITP also have problems with production, but still do not have a majority of small platelets.

I don't know...maybe this was just a flukey thing or the doctor is wrong. Discuss it on Friday when you see the new doctor.

ONLY is too strong a word. If your father has the disease AND your mother is a carrier, then you can inherit it. Also, extremely remote possibility of random mutation. Also, if inherited, it would probably have shown up sooner, like infancy or early childhood.

Really strange, though, as there do not seem to be any other known causes of small platelets that do not have childhood onset. Please keep us posted!

My father isn't in the picture, I haven't had a civilized conversation with him in years. So any of his medical records are impossible to get a hold of, we go off of memory. All we know is that he had psychosis, bipolar disorder, and was epileptic. Knowing nothing about him is hard to rule out some diseases, especially if they're genetic. :(
