It all depends on your counts and the doctor. We all have different experiences with doctors. Some are very good dealing with ITP and some are not so great. A good doctor will sit and speak to you calmly about your options....treatment or simple monitoring.

What was your last count?

If your count is still 45 (or above), the doctor should suggest monitoring it for a while until you drop to around 20 or 30 (or have bleeding), then treatments would be discussed.

The turn-around time for a CBC (complete blood count, usually the test used to check platelet levels) is typically one day. However, if a facility has its own equipment onsite, which many hematology facilities do, then the time can be reduced to an hour or less. Other tests, including for instance a PTT (prothrombin time test, used to check how quickly a person clots), can take longer, again depending on what is available in-house.

Good luck with your appointment. I'm one of the people here who sees a hematologist for regular monitoring, as I currently do not need anything more.

As Aoi says, it depends on the equipment they have. When I get a CBC at the Hemo's office, I sit there while they run the sample through the analyzer and the result prints out right away. It takes less than 3 minutes. They hand it to me and that's my copy. They print one for the doctor and file too. They are less formal with me though since I've been going there for 17 years and know the staff pretty well.

Some insurances require that the sample be sent out or done in a certain lab (sent out), so it depends on that too. All you need for the appointment is a CBC. The doctor may suggest other labs to check for other things, but they don't all do that.

One lab I went to a couple years ago had a very friendly phlebotomist. On a slow day I asked her if she'd mind giving me a tour of the equipment, and she did. I found it helpful to see the equipment up close and understand what goes on after they get the blood into the tube.

That depends on your counts, if you are on treatment or not, and how often the doctor wants it done.
