I know this is a USA site however I prefer this to the UK site. I am based in UK in London. Does anyone know of good Doctors specialising in ITP. My Consultant who is very nice but specialises in oncology and I just wonder would an ITP specialist have more
of an interest in ITP? Just a thought. So if anyone else is from UK would love to hear.
Thanks

I live in London too and see Dr Drew Provan at the Royal London. He is the foremost ITP expert in the UK. He is really easy to talk to, doesn't panic in the slightest and allows the patient to make decisions about their treatments.

He can be seen in full flow here..

That film is a bit old now but it's still relevant.

There are a couple of other haematologists who have an interest in ITP in London but Drew is the one to see given the choice.

Thanks Ann. I will speak to my consultant and perhaps make an appointment to see him. Just a chat. I live in Surrey so its easier to have regular blood tests near home but i will give that a think and i actually heard his name linked to itp. Today i am at 9. Still cant leave the hospital they say. Only above 10. So hoping pred works a bit harder.

Good Morning, a while ago I posted a thread about ITP Specialists in the UK. I know Ann mentioned she saw Dr Provan.

Quick question how do you go about seeing them? I am being seen by a Consultant and Haematologist in Surrey Hospital - UK. And wanted to go to see if I could get an appointment with Dr Provan. Some people say he will not be any different in his treatments that I am receiving at the moment but I know he is a specialist where as my Consultant his field is Cancer I would say.

I would still like to go to Surrey for blood tests and to see the team there as its easier than coming into London all the time.

Do you have to be referred by your current GP or would it be my Consultant.

I just feel I want to get as much information as possible with this condition as its still been 6 months for me since being diagnosed and now we are talking second line treatment and its all so much information, I want to make sure its the right treatment etc etc.

Thanks

It should really be your GP. Ask for a referral for a second opinion.

Hi Ann, I know you responded to this thread awhile ago, but wanted to know, did you get a referral to see Dr Provan as a private patient, I am now trying to get a referral from my GP so will only I think get that next week.

Does he have a certain type of treatment he prefers or do you chat together....
Only problem is I am just going to see him as I want piece of mind and want to talk to someone who is a specialist in their field and see what they would suggest, I wont be going for regular tests with him or treatment as I cannot afford to go private with him, only just 1 appointment....

No, I've never been a private patient of any doctor. My haematologist at the time emailed him to ask if I could get on his drug trial for Nplate. I also emailed him and he agreed. Later I moved to London and just carried on seeing him after the trial ended. He sees NHS patients from all over the country for second opinions.

He's very easy to talk to. He does have his favourite treatments but doesn't push them. He likes Rituximab but I've never had it. He also likes mycophenolate and Nplate. He doesn't do splenectomies.

Also worth checking with UK ITP association. They're extremely helpful.
