Hello. When a person receives treatment isn't always decided by the count, sometimes it is up to the individual doctor and the symptoms of the patient. Most would treat under 10 or 20, but if someone has few symptoms, sometimes the doctor will wait a bit to see if the counts come up on their own. Prednisone is usually the first treatment choice and the side effects can be bad. It's good that your doctor isn't panicking, some do.

ITP usually doesn't run in the family, but if your family has a history of autoimmune disorders, it is more common for some of the members to acquire an autoimmune disorder of some sort. ITP can also be triggered by a virus or bacterial infection, or certain herbal supplements such as Echinacea.

Hi, I have had this since 2012.

Only just started treatment my levels dropped to 7,000. I am on prednisolone, I was covered in bruises and one particularly large one that appeared to be spreading / active bleeding, so I think that was the key for me, I went on some anti bleeding tablets initially.

My counts responded to the prednisolone, and I am being tapered off it. So it's a case of let's see what happens next.

The first time, I got bruises and I was diagnosed I was monitored weekly, then monthly and my counts sort of rebounded. Fingers crossed your'll go up.

jadelou, your doctor isn't panicking with is a good sign that he/she knows their stuff. It's a good idea if the platelet count is going up to wait a bit and see if it continues up or comes back down. I'd guess that if the next count is much lower they'll want to treat. The doctor will look at a trend rather than one particular count.. if that makes sense.
