My brother is newly diagnosed and walked into the hospital with a platelet count of 3. It's been going up and down for a week now, from a 1 to a 15. It's currently at 10. With such a low platelet count, how can he have no symptoms? He's not sick or fatigued. He feels absolutely fine. Is this normal?

It is normal for some people. People are different when it comes to platelet counts. Some have nasty symptoms and some are just fine. Is he going to be treated?

The treatments they are giving him in the hospital are not working. They may be sending him home today. Are there any alternative treatments besides medication?

When I was diagnosed, I had a platelet count of 3 and petechia covering my entire body and I felt 100% fine.
In fact, the nurses had a hard time keeping me in my bed the first 36 hours. I kept wanting to go on walks around the hospital and snuck outside a few times for a cigarette.

It wasn't until I started the meds that I started feeling crummy.

I hope you found the natural treatments section of the message boards. There are some good tips over there! :)

Sending good vibes to your brother!

Jeco:

There are alternative treatments but they can take a long time to work (if at all) and no one thing works for everyone. What treatments has your brother tried?

I think, based on my own experience, that he should just wait. Everyone talked about how poorly I was responding for two weeks-- not at all, actually. Stayed at zero platelets for almost two weeks. They had me scheduled to begin promacta but it was delayed in coming. Thank goodness! Because the day I was to get on it, my platelets began to shoot up, at over 1,000 an hour. And so, I was only below normal im platelets for about 16 days. Your brother might do the same.

I'm with you KayL. I entered the hospital with a count of 10,000 which dropped to 2,000 within a few hours despite the platelet transfusion and Ivig transfusion they gave me. I could't see skin there were so many petechia. And yet, I felt 100,000 fine. That's very disconcerting.

I was the opposite. At 3k, I was at work and feeling very tired and dizzy. I'd rather have been feeling well considering how crazy busy I was.
