Medical alert bracelet? was created by llbitty
I have a medical card that I carry in my wallet, but was wondering whether I should invest in a medical alert bracelet as well. I have a 3 year old & sometimes don't have my purse with my wallet with me when I am doing activites with her. What are your thoughts on wearing a medical alert bracelet for ITP? If you do wear one, what info did you get on yours?

I have one and certainly feel a lot more secure having it. In Canada www.medicalert.ca
Medical professionals know to look for one of these if you are unconcious.

Emergency personnel are trained to look on the person for a medical alert [bracelet, necklace] - in an emergency they do not have time to go looking through purses or wallets, that is valuable time taken away from the patient.

Has anyone looked into the bracelets (or necklaces) that have a flash drive for you to store detailed medical information? I did ask one EMT whether they would be useful, and he said it depends on having the right connectors: hosptals' PCs and laptops would use a standard USB connector, android phones mini (micro?) USB, iphones and iPads something else. He said that with the right connector it would be very useful.

Any thoughts?

While researching getting one - I read a lot about the USB medic alert bracelets and necklaces - several of them had poor reviews (did not stay closed, could only be used if the receiver had the right software etc...)

Even many ER nurses don't know what ITP is. I was met with this stumped reaction more than once. As a result, my daughter's bracelet simply said: "Bleeding risk. Low platelets. ITP." I also had her doc's telephone number in it. I got hers at laurenshope.com. She was a pretty active kid then, so hers was a simple nylon version with velcro, but they had a good variety of styles. Some were so pretty, however, I wasn't sure it would be noticed as a medic alert bracelet, so I think I would stick to a simple style that has the red star medallion visible. A friend of mine wears one on a chain around his neck, but most women wouldn't want that interfering with their other jewelry.

I have a USB medical alert bracelet that I got from Walgreens for $15.

I went for this brand because it had a standard USB plug-in that simply opens a .pdf of my medical history: medicalhistorybracelet.com/
It was easy enough to program and it works on both PCs and Macs.

I figure I'll get a "traditional" medical alert bracelet that I can wear with nicer attire soon(er or later), as well but for every day, general use this is nice. AND I didn't have to try to figure out which of my medical concerns was the most important to have engraved on it!

I have a bracelet and a dog tag. I wear the dog tag when I don't want to chance someone asking me "whats that for?".

Kay! How have you been? Missed you!

Oooh dog tags are cute! I should get a set of those, too!

Jeffrey, I'm GREAT! I got your e-mail, you make me smile and laugh like a kid.

Now I'm sitting over here thinking of cute ways to jazz up medical alert tags and bracelets. I could buy them, but I'm always looking for a good DIY project to stress my friends out with.

"Ummm, Kay? Are you sure you should be using those sharp objects?"
"What's the worse that could happen?!"
(awkward silence)
"Oh a little blood loss never killed anybody!" ;)
