prednisone and high blood sugar?

prednisone and high blood sugar? was created by MommaBee
For those of you who have been in high dose prednisone, any experiences with high blood sugar and or monitoring for it? I am currently in 70mg daily and won't see the hematologist to start to taper for two more weeks. When I did see them she told me we would need to keep an eye on my blood sugars but did not order any lab testing etc to do so. The last few days in particular however I feel somewhat "symptomatic" of high blood sugar in the late afternoon to early evening time. I realized today I should start to be more cautious with sugar and carb intake in lunch/early afternoon but am also wondering:

1) did/do others experience this while on the prednisone?

2) was there monitoring done for non-diabetic people on prednisone?

Thanks in advance for any thoughts or advice!

Yes, I always get high blood sugar on pred when it is 20mg or more. My doc monitors my blood sugar at each blood draw so every other week or third week. I am careful about what I eat... Protein, veggies, limit carbs and very few sweets. That works for me also makes me feel healthier. I did look up some sample menus/ meals online recommended for people with type 2 diabetes. I used those as a guide.

High blood sugar is pretty common, but doctors don't usually monitor it (or anything else for that matter, like calcium or potassium). I know my sugar was up at times, but only borderline high. I went to my neighbors once when I knew it was up (he was diabetic) and they tested me. It will normalize once the dose is lowered.

Dru - you have a cautious doctor! That's great.

Thank you both! And such a quick response! But makes me feel better that it is okay and not missing large scale issue! I shall Google the diabetic type diet and try small frequent snacks instead perhaps!

Thanks!

Yes, As Sandi wrote, it is a common side effect w prednisone. Of course, whether or not to monitor depends on how high. In my case, after years of prednisone I developed diabetes. At one point when my pred, dose was elevated, I needed to inject insulin. However, after a splenectomy and remission (one a half yrs ago - my blood work last week was 322), my diabetes is long gone. So this side effect is reversed after tampering -

Now that I think about it, my grandfather had RA ( the only person in my family that I know of that had an autoimmune disorder and it was debilitating) he was treated with steroids and did have high blood sugar. I think once they figured out that steroids weren't effective and just treated the pain his blood sugar went back to normal.
