I have been informed for the past 5 years or so that my platelets were on the low end of normal. They have ranged from 130k-160k over the last 5 years. I was tested in Oct. 2012 and they were 140k. I had a skin cancer surgery about 3 weeks ago. This involved very little blood loss but did require Keflex antibiotic as a preventative post procedure that I took for about 5 days. I had routine labs one week after this surgery and it revealed Platelets at 113k. I have never encountered this large of a drop since being followed for my Platelets. Is it most likely that the reduction stemmed from the surgical procedure and/or Keflex? If so, will the Platelets likely rebound to my "normal range"? Thank you for your feedback.

Hi Chris, Platelet counts fluctuate all the time. A count of 113K is very safe and nothing to be concerned about. You may have less platelets than most people (which is what is meant by normal) but you have more than enough to be safe.

Antibiotics temporarily raise platelet counts for some people, and lower them for others.

I agree with Tamar, and have another thought. It may have happened to you a few times and you just never knew it. Counts can go down sometimes and rebound before you even know it happened.
