Should I contact the doctor? was created by ambermarie3282
I was diagnosed with ITP last January (had a platelet count of 8,000) I had a platelet transfusion and was on high dose prednisone for a few months. since then my platelet count has been above 100,000 so they haven't done any other treatment. I haven't had my count checked in a while and I notice a few of the "blood spots" (Can't spell the technical name) and last night when I brushed my teeth my gums were bleeding uncontrolably for a while. This morning I looked in the mirror while in the bathroom and my gums had started bleeding a little again for no reason. Should I contact the doctor? Since I've had ITP I never know when I should call and when I'm over reacting....it's so hard to know. THANKS!!!

There is doubt in your mind, of course you should get a count done!

I have always thought this was a great quote:

"Instead of wasting your time worrying about symptoms, just get it checked out." - Nieca Goldberg, MD

Good luck!

Yes, I would say it's time to get a count done. Anytime you notice symptoms, a CBC is wise. Many of us have a standing order at the hemo's office and can walk in and have an instant count done anytime. Maybe you could arrange something like that.

Hmmmm. I would usually get the count done, and then one of the nurses would contact me by phone with the treatment plan, if needed. I rarely saw or spoke to my hemo which was fine since things were easily coordinated. Guess you just need a plan.

I have a standing order at my doctor's office to have my platelets checked at anytime. I am in and out of the lab within 5 - 10 min. The platelet count is printed out on paper prior to my leaving the lab. When I have any large bruising, bleeding, or prior to hematologist appointment, I have my platelets checked. It's great that they have a nice lab and I know the results within 5 - 10 min.

wow, that would be nice!! I am actually thinking of switching hemotolgists, my friend went to the one I am currently going to a while a go and got no answers for the problem she was having, but was recently referred to a different hemotologist and is getting answers and on her way to a solution. I live in a smaller town and there is only one hemotologist that comes here from a bigger city nearby, so I am just going to start going to the bigger city for help. Thanks for all your input!!!

Ambermarie,

That is great that your counts are so good!

My platelet count was 8k today. I haven't taken any medications for the past year. I don't have any bleeding or any problems except feeling very tired all the time.
