Anything in the criminal justice workforce. I am looking forward to my future being a police officer, and am worried about the hiring process, etc. with having ITP.

I talked to a friend that is a Sargent on the PD. He felt that ITP would not be an issue with getting hired. The only way the employer would find out about ITP, is if you disclosed that information or the employer required blood work (CBC), which to his knowledge is not required. The only fluids the employer would test is Urine, for drug screening. Having ITP does not necessarily mean a person could not perform a Law Enforcement career. As long as one has passed all of the other elements for Criminal Justice, it should not be an issue.

I responded to this in an earlier thread. If there is a question asked of the applicant such as 'any other health conditions' and the applicant does not disclose ITP, they will not be hired if the condition is discovered because they were dishonest on the application. That's a bad reason not to be hired, and if he later goes into remission the earlier dishonesty could still be held against him.

If during the physical bruises are noticed the doctor might ask the applicant for more information.

Practically speaking, very low counts could put a police officer at significant risk on the job so it makes sense that it could be a condition of concern during hiring.

Also, medical testing for hiring will vary. It is possible that blood could be drawn and tested.

I used to be responsible for all testing related to hiring at a large county system that included sheriff's deputies.

I have read the health requirements for police officers in the UK as it is available on the web. It states that thrombocytopenia with a count below 25 is likely to be reason to reject the applicant. With a count over 25 the medical history would be looked at and an individual judgement made but an applicant would most likely have to be stable with a count over 25 to be considered.

Are the health requirements for the force in question not available to view?

Ann, it would vary by jurisdiction in the US (which could be federal, state or local) whether the health requirements were available to view. There isn't any consistent policy on this. One could find their way to human resources and request to see them and they may or may not clearly state all the requirements.
