Michael - first of all, relax. And for goodness sakes, smile! This is not the end of the world or the end of your life.

Sounds like you got stuck with a bunch of medical personnel who didn't know what they were dealing with. People with platelet counts of 4k are not knocking on death's door. If you were able to talk and breathe, you certainly didn't need life support.

ITP can be scary, but it is not a death sentence and life can still go on normally. Sometimes you have to treat when counts go down but for the most part, you can still do what you normally did.

Start reading as much as you can and ask questions.

Oh - when a platelet count is given, it is given in thousands. Example - your count of 4 was really 4,000 platelets per liter of blood....not 4 platelets in your entire body.

Well, if my math is right your Platelet count is around 130k. The Platelet range is 150,000 - 450,000. You are low but not in any danger, so RELAX and Smile. This personal therapy can make a difference in your mental health. Stressing out does not help matters. Sounds like you need to consider finding a new Dr. as the ones you have been seeing are not familiar with ITP. Sign a form for Life support!!! You are not going to die!!! When you say you "lost who you are" make me wonder if you maybe going through Depression. I lost who I was after being diagnosed with ITP. Suffered with depression for awhile before I seen a Dr. for depression. May I ask how old you are? I do not feel you necessarily need treatment if your Platelets are around 130,000. Just watch for symptoms of excessive bruising, bleeding or little red dots on your body (Petechiae). Have your Platelet count checked if these symptoms occure. Do some research on ITP so you can familiarize yourself with this disorder. You will be fine. This is a great bunch of fellow ITP'ers here that understend what you are going through!!
