I have recently been diagonose with Chronic ITP. My last count was 53,000. I have been having hives off and on for the last month. Some days not at all, some days slight, and some days off the chain. Always seems to come on at night. I take Benedryl when they are worse. Never seem to last more than a few hours. Is this normal with ITP?

No, ITP does not cause hives. Are you on any treatments?

Do you wake up with them or are they there when you go to bed?

I get hives about 2 or 3 hours after I get sun, could that be it?

I am not undergoing any treatment at the moment. I got a stomach virus last month and ever since I have had the hive problem. They always seem to appear right about bedtime.

Hi:
Sorry about the ITP and the hives. Hives is usually another autoimmune disease reaction. In other words an allergic reaction. I found that winter is worse time of the year, which does not make any sense. I would look at the little things that might have changed in your life, such as your shampoo, body soap, clothes detergent, anything environmental, etc. Some times it is the dry air, mold levels in the air, pollen, etc.

I have had to quit using any opaque bar soaps. If the soap is not transparent then I get an out break. For the pad 4 weeks I have had to make sure I take my antihistamine on a regular basis

The question is do you have allergies?

I have never had any problem with allergies until this ITP surfaced last spring. I have started watching what I am using.I switched from scented body washes and lotions to Aveeno Body Wash and Curel Body Cream. Don't know if it has done any good but my skin feels better. Also have been switching to fragance free detergent and softener. Since hives come on around bedtime I started taking showers at night instead of morning. This helped last night. I take Benadryl but not every day. Just when they are more widespread. more widespread. I read somewhere that Benadryl can aggrevate ITP systems. Have you had any problem taking Benadryl on a regular basis?

Sorry, I have not been online. Some people do well with Benadryl. For me Benadryl is like any drug that has in its description "it might cause drowsiness" which means I am sleepy for up to 2 days. I use Allegra. It generally works on my allergies of all type allergic responses, It is now over the counter. If Allegra is not working then I will use Benadryl. You will need to find out what works best for you. Good luck.

Fortunatley, the hives have eased up in the last week or so. I take a Benadryl now and then but hives are much better. I still get a red rash sometimes. Lasts maybe 30 minutes and goes away. Now I am wondering if my immune system has just gone haywire for awhile. I go for another count next week and will bring it up with my hemotologist. Thanks for the advice

My son is 21 months and was diagnosed with ITP just 3 weeks ago. A couple days prior he broke out with hives and he has had them ever since. The dr seems to think he is having a reaction to a virus in his system (the virus which she thinks caused the ITP). Did your hives clear up? My son had been on Benadryl for about 3 1/2 weeks and I feel like they will never go away. I was just curious how it turned out for you. Thank You

Hi Kris-

I am glad to say that my hives have finally gone away. I was diagnosed in November after routine blood work. The hives kicked in at the end of December after I had a stomach virus. I haven't had a breakout since the first of March. I took Benadryl but not on a daily basis. Eventually they went away. Counts are still kind of low but no breakouts. I hope your son will get rid of his hives soon and I hope that he will get well.

Thank you for getting back to me. I have been searching all over the internet and it just does not seem like something common for one to have ITP and hives. I have read the hives could be a reaction to a treatment (my son had WinRho), but he had some hives prior to the diagnosis/treatment. I do understand that you could get them from the stomach virus that you had. It is hard for me because my son does not speak yet, so I do not even know if he had one. I had one a couple months ago and was worried I would give it to him. Maybe I did? I do know that by his bloodwork, he still has a virus in his system.

I go back on Monday for his counts again. I can only hope that they went up. Thank You again for getting back to me and I hope that you are better soon : ) Glad to hear that your hives finally went away.

I was diagnosed with ITP over a month ago and my hives appeared two weeks after the diagnosis. It had lasted for three weeks by now. Like u, my hives appear only at night.
Some days the hives keep me awake and are big and ugly. Other days, they are small and sparse.
They usually disappear by noon the next day.
I read that your hives went away.
Did u do anything e.g. change your diet so that the hives went away?
Thanks for sharing!

hunnybear this thread is over 7 years old - doubt if you will get an answer from anyone in it.
Why not start a new thread?

I don't know of anyone who attributes hives to their ITP.
