New to this many questions was created by Debby
My mother who is 86 has Alzheimers but also sometime ago was diagnosed with myeloproliferative disease. Her platelet count hovers around 36. I do not plan on giving her treatment because of the Alzheimers, age ext. She sees a hemologist every 3 months but he's not great at explaining mainly because I'm not going to treat her. With the Alzheimers she is non communitive can't tell me if she's in pain. She resides in a nursing home. She has lost alot of weight. Can anyone tell me what to expect? any web sites that would be helpful? I've been thru alot this past year lost my Dad (heart failure) my sister 2 months ago to a rare renal cancer. I just don't want her to suffer and she can't tell me if she is. Thanks

Hi Debby,
I think your question here is if having low platelets would be causing your mother to be in pain, please correct me if I am wrong.
I have had platelet counts of 2000 and felt no effects, no pain no tiredness but this is just me, I have seen others that can tell if their platelets are low by how they feel, but I never can tell as I feel no different at normal counts or low counts.
I hope this helps you sure have had some big battles over the last twelve months, good wishes sent your way.

There is no practice run in life.

Hi Debby,
Low platelets by themselves don't cause pain. Some people have fatigue and other symptoms that are usually due to a related disease but not the platelet count alone.

Whether she is in discomfort because of the myeloproliferative disease that I can't answer.

Is her weight loss related to the disease or Alzheimers?

What I would like to address is the hematologist - to me it seems like he is blowing you off because of your mother's age. He is her doctor, you [or medicare or medicaid] are paying him - and he should be explaining everything to you, he should be earning his fee.

Debby please accept my condolences on the loss of your father and sister, I am sorry. And now your mother's diagnosis - you have a lot on your plate.
