Petechias, Beach and Smoking was created by kosmus
Hi,
I've low platelets, stable for now around 50k, and sometimes have a few little petechias in may chest.
Last weekend I went to the beach, and now I notice that i've some little petechias in my neck.
I've done blood work last friday and my "friends" still around 50k, so they didn't go down !
Do you think in any way the sun light and the beach can motivate more petechias?

Another think, I'm a smoker...and i'm thinking that maybe this fact can decrease or trigger my low platelets...even all of us now that smoking is bad for a lot of reasons and it's good to stop smoking...do you think that quit smoking can help my platelets?

Thanks
Pedro

I don't know - being a beach lover, I've never had a problem with an increase in symptoms when I've gone there.

Smoking didn't lower or raise my count - quit smoking 2 years and 12 days ago and that didn't lower or raise my count [it is up about 100k from last count but that's most likely because I just finished an antibiotic].

I won't give you the "you should quit smoking" lecture - that didn't help me so it won't help you :)

I doubt going to the beach has any affect on Platelets, so do not deprive yourself of that activity. Not sure, but I do not think the sun affects Platelets, to much sun may cause more Petechia and other complications. How long were you in the sun? Over exposure to the sun affects poeple differently and for those of us with a compromised immune system, over exposure may cause problems. Smoking, not sure. Generally, smoking is not good. I am sure you already know about the health risks so I will not get into that. With ITP and other health complications I think we are all different when it comes to things that trigger the issue along with side affects. Are you receiving any treatment?

Hi,
No at the moment I'm not receiving any treatment.
I was only prednisone between november and February, after that the counts remains stable around 50k. (in prednisone the max i had was 126k).
Will have an appointment in my doctor on july 11, I don't know what he will decide.
But if in February with 50k he decided not to do nothing more, maybe he will decide the same.
For me, because I don't have any symptoms beyond a dozen of pontual petechias in my body, it's great to think I can stay in this "Wait and See Program".
In the other hand, I think "For now I'm stable...only with 50k...but stable...and if with any treatment I'll start bouncing...with lower levels?"..itp it's strange...we never know...
