New here and need some help... was created by AshleyandKyle
Hi there.

I haven't been diagnosed with anything yet so I hope you don't mind me popping over here for some advice.

Around 6 months ago it was picked up on a routine blood test that my platelets were slightly low, 143,000. So my doc recommended I have them repeated every 2 weeks or so, and this is how it went. 143,000 dropped to 128,000 dropped to 119,000 to 109,000. I am due to have more bloods done this week.

I was sent for an ultrasound on my abdomen and more bloods were ordered (checking for autoimmune diseases, thyroid etc) all came back clear.

I now have an appt to see a Haematologist on 7th July however, I've recently found out I am pregnant & have heard that having low platelets can be dangerous while you are pregnant. Will I need any different-from-normal antenatal care ?

Can anyone relate to my situation ? If so, what was wrong ?

It seems a long and frustrating process, but just to know "what" was wrong, would be something to start with.

Not much help on the pregnancy part. Wondering if you have viewed the ITP and Pregnancy part of this fourm?

I haven't no. I was more asking about the condition itself though, I mean, like I said nothing diagnosed at the minute I am completely exhausted, I mean being pregnant does contribute to this however I am only awake now for around 5 hours a day and even before I was pregnant it was affecting my day-to-day activities so I wondered if anyone had any insight as to if it could be ITP or something else ? I know only a doctor can tell me this but it seems they are taking ages in the process.

Ashley ITP didn't make me tired at all - some people it does.

When is your blood work being done this week? Will you get the results right away or have to wait till you see the hematologist?

Honestly I stay away from children and pregnant lady questions as I know nothing in those areas. Sorry this is so frustrating for you - I'd start a list of questions for the hematologist, it isn't long until your appointment. When do you see your OB?

Hi Ashley - most of the expecting Mom's we've had here with low platelets have had ITP. For some, it predated the pregnancy and for others, they found out after they became pregnant. Sometimes it goes away months after the baby is delivered and sometimes it does not. As you can see, there are not a lot of solid answers here. ITP tends to hang around as long as it wants.

Most women have a safe delivery with an epidural if their counts are above 100. Under 100, they can still have a safe delivery but usually cannot have an epidural. There are a few treatments to try to get counts up prior to delivery. Good luck at your appointment - counts can go up!

Have you had your Iron or B-12 levels checked? These are levels I have had checked due to low energy. Levels are within normal range. ITP has definatly affected my stamina.
Good Luck.

All of my levels are within range now, even Platelets. So why do I get so Exhausted when I do something Physical. I am waiting for the results to determine if I have Sarcoidosis.

Last time I posted I missed out a count.. My platelets had rose to 133 in the last blood test, but if I've learnt anything from this forum it's that that doesn't mean much.

I just got my latest bloods back and my platelets have dropped again, down to 118. I have been taking the standard pregnancy folic acid tablets since finding out I was pregnant (I think it's 400mcg) however, my folic acid is also low so I have been prescribed 5mg folic acid.

Now that they have dropped again I am increasingly getting worried. I am still due to see the haematologist on 7th July.

But what happens next ???

My guess is that you will just be monitored for now. You're not low enough for treatment, so all they will do is check you periodically. This could go on for the entire pregnancy and hopefully, you will just stay above 100 (very safe) and not have to treat.
