Cured?

Cured? was created by lornahalbert
In January I was asked to take pred after a count of 20k. My counts have been between 20k-75k for a year without treatment. It was a small dose.. and my bruises healed so fast and all the way up till now. I took pred again about a month ago for an unrelated cause- a cold/allergies.

Because the bruises left, I didn't check the counts since January. However for the first time since then, a few bruises showed up and so I got it checked.

The count was 112k and my question is this.. am I cured? Or because it's less than 150k am I still chronic but in remission? I had ITP for 12 months (at least since I was dx'ed) so I thought that made me chronic ... but I thought the pred might have cured it.

I know that no one can say for sure, but what do you think? Does this sound similar to anyone here?

And I've never been over 100k since I was dx'ed .. I would bruise around 40-50k ... It's strange that I'm bruising at so much higher now.

There isn't any way to say you are 'cured' except that you don't get a recurrance before you die. ITP isn't curable that way. You are considered to be in remission until you aren't. Those are just labels. It's great to hear you are well, and I think that might be a good way to think about it.

Thank you Erica. I guess I got a little panicky. I remember how stressed I was during that year. I haven't thought about it much since I got treatment and the bruises left. I even stopped wearing my bracelet. Since I saw bruises for the first time since treatment, I guess I felt dread. And I thought my count would be higher if I was really 'cured'. I'm not complaining- 112k is amazing. I just don't want to go through the psychological stress I felt when I constantly had to worry and check my counts.

Your right though. I really should just feel lucky to be well.

Sorry, but is there no cure for ITP do you just go from having low platelets to normal platelets. I'm just wondering if this is something that I will have to deal with for the rest of my life. My counts have been all over the place.

Over the past few years I have come to accept that I will never be cured and that I will have to live with the ups and downs of ITP for the rest of my life. I try to take a positive outlook and feel somewhat special that I have something that very few others do.

Yup, it's unpredictable alright. You just learn to watch for the signs that your body presents. Me, I bruise at 15k or so, lower and I start to bleed. Most people don't think they are sick if they don't "feel" sick. Last year I never felt better but my legs were covered with bruises after a day in the dirt. A trip to the lab confirmed it. So, cured? No, just a remission.

when my counts go below 60 I can get nose bleeds, blisters in my mouth or have bleeding in my mouth when cleaning teeth. Benny:)

Yeah my signs of low platelets are red dots all over the bridge of my nose and cheeks, headaches. Very low platelets under 10k is uncontrolled menstrual bleeding (sorry guys), blood blisters in my mouth, and dark bruising on my legs.

I went for 15 years with no ITP issues after being diagnosed in 1988, splenectomy in 1990. In 2005 it came back into my life and has been around since. You are never cured until you're gone for this world.
