Kind of confused was created by quedal
I got a call from my hematologist's assistant today who said that the Dr wanted me to go in for a ct scan with contrast....b/c I have ITP!! He just said at my visit last week that he didn't think that it was ITP because my numbers have never been below 125 when not pregnant, and are usually around 140.... They have only dropped low during pregnancy. So, I am confused and scared. It is possible to have like a mild ITP and not have really low numbers??

Thanks!!

Yes, it is possible to have mild ITP, but 140 is considered normal. I'm surprised they would even suggest a CAT scan with that count.

My count on the day of my appt was actually 187 right there in his office! and 160ish in the tube with some other chemical in it...but this is just what the Dr assitant said to me on the phone when I asked why he was ordering a ct scan, she said "the Dr. says that it is ITP and would like a detailed view of your abdomen..." I don't know whether it is necessary, but I do want answers, so I am torn!

You want answers but what is the question? The question is 'what in the world is my doctor thinking' not 'what is wrong with my blood' because the results you are reporting are normal!

Well...they have gone down to the 80s in pregnancy and have been in the 120s and 130s when not pregnant-which is barely abnormal...I know that, but that is what they said. I really don't feel like I have an issue, but don't want to have one in the future either. I will be interested to see what he has to say about my results (from about 25 tubes of blood he took last week and the ct scan) next week. I appreciate that he is being thorough, but don't want to jump to any drastic measures either. The reason I was reffered to him was because of the low platelets appearing for the second time in a pregnancy and an ensuing miscarriage. The first time I was reffered (last pregnancy) the hematologist just did a CBC found me to be at 118 and sent me on my way, telling me to stop taking fish oil and garlic. I have never had any symptoms, except mystery bruises, but those happen to lots of people don't they? Is this guy just trying to make a buck, or doing a really detailed job? I know that there are a million things that can affect your platelet level...

Well, if he took a lot of blood, maybe there is a result other than platelets that he is questioning.

What would that be? Some sort of antibody or something?

I have no idea, I just know it's unusual to have a CAT scan with normal platelets. It's possible your other blood work is fine, maybe he is just erring on the side of caution.

Thank you for your replies. I just don't see how his assistant could tell me over the phone that I have ITP without telling me how they know that. I will post again when the Dr. talks to me about results on the 19th.
