My son- 1st year @ college got mono and it put him into the hospital (due to count dropping to (0) and vomiting up some blood & nosebleeds. They did winro & heavy steroids (4days). His numbers went up temporarily as they do with treatments and crashed down to 4 then went up to 18 a week later, then 15 a week later. He has kicked mono amazingly. His blood is clean from all signs of mono. Now he is getting ready to return to college. He feels fine, not systematic at all.
Anyone out there who do fine with these low numbers??

I usually do well with low numbers around 10-20, but the last few months have been getting petechia and bruises even with those counts, but i still go to work and do my normal things even with my counts around that level.

Lauren,
Thanks for your reply---it makes me feel better that someone else goes about their normal day with low numbers. My son looks totally fine- no bruises, no rash.
He goes in today for another CBC....praying for platelets to go up!

Hi All: I had counts as low as 0 (during pregnancy) and was fine..today my count is 2k and i'm going on Prednisone & IVIG in a couple of days.

I managed to run a business and be a mom for the better part of 6 years perfectly fine w/o any treatment - counts were 4k-7k. The thing that got me concerned this past week is that I had a really heavy menstrual cycle and lost a lot of blood. My hemoglobin was 50% what it should be so I finally gave in and went to hema.

So, yes your son can have a normal college life, just let him know that drinking is a no no and thins your blood.

Good luck and keep us posted!

Mine have been that low for a year now. :) No random bruises.. only provoked ones... Like today, in fact! (Dropped a container on my hand.. HARD... Left a mark, but nothing that bad). I'd be willing to bet there are people out there with counts that low that don't even know it. I say if he's not having symptoms, there's nothing to fret about.
Rock on for 22! :D

  • Diagnosed in 2000, at 59, after being on moderately high doses of NSAIDs for arthritis. Splenectomy and rituxan both failed (2004). Did well on prednisone till summer 2018--then terrible reactions. Promacta since 11-19.

Although my hema always increases my prednisone dose if I drop below 15, I feel the same whether my platelets are low or really low (my normal seems to be in the 20s). Sometimes bruising gives me a clue that my platelets are low, but usually I feel fine. I've never noticed feeling any different because of my ITP.

I'm not a college student, however, and I don't engage in any extreme sports or all-night partying! If I were young, I'd probably be more careful than many college students. Otherwise, my only real complaints are the time I spend getting blood tests and not being able to take NSAIDs for my arthritis.
