Nose Bleeds was created by steroidsuck
Hello. My platelet count is around 100,000 and I am currently on 80 mg of prednisone a day. But I still get nose bleeds around 5 times a day. They aren't gushing nose bleeds, just sometimes I scratch my nose and notice it. They only last for a few minutes but they are pretty annoying. Any one know of a way to stop/alleviate this?

Try using saline nasal spray and/or Vaseline in the nostrils. Sometimes nose bleeds are caused by dry air, especially around this time of year.

I also get nose bleeds at higher counts when the seasons change or the air is dry. Just got back from 6 days in Utah where they heat part of the house with a wood burning stove. Rather than vaseline, I like mentholatum better, but the docs say not to use any petrolum products. I find the AYR brand of saline gel works great.

I posted a similar topic a few months ago when my 5 yr old(now 6)had many frequent nose bleeds.

We have learned how to control the nose bleeds and here's a checklist of what we did to manage the situation. This might be helpful to you.
1. Never lie down and let the blood go to the stomach. -i almost fainted when my sonthrew up the blood he had swallowed while sleeping.
2. Use a saline gel or bactroban(just google it). Our EENT highly recommended it and it works like a charm.
3. At bad situations, we plug the nostril with compressed cotton and petroleum gel WHILE icing the bridge of the nose to constrict the capillaries that lead to the inner nostrils.
4. Cotarization did not work for my son.
5. Transemic meds to stop the bleeding was given during the duration of severe nosebleeds. The name of the drug we gave was Hemostan.
6. If it is not a severe nosebleed, just pinch thesoft cartillage under the bridge for a few mins

I went to the physician every time and he would burn my veins. But my nose bleeds would last 2 to 3 hours :-)
When I'm in the mountain i also get nosebleeds but that has nothing to do with ITP. It has everything to do with the mountains and dry air.

I always let cold water flush my wrists and neck. Never put my head completely back but halfway and put cotton up my nose :-)

Good luck
