Getting tooth pulled was created by dondude
Angelina started complaining about a sore tooth. Doctor hasn't allowed her to go to the dentist for fear of bleeding gums. Took her to dentist and she has abscessed tooth that needs to be pulled. Her count is still 3000. Doc doesn't want tooth pulled? She is on her 6th treatment of nplate. Now doc wants her to get ivig next Monday then start her on prednisone to get her count up. She has no bleeding problems just bruises easy. As a parent i see no other option but to pull tooth. She is on amoxicillin till next Friday to kill infected tooth. Pain from toothache makes her cry and not want to eat. Anyone else have any experience with this sort of problem?

Timothy has had a very bad tooth for a year now, but due to his very low counts could do nothing about it. They wanted to do an extraction of his wisdom tooth and a root canal, but there was NO way to do it. Finally his counts are high enough now to do it and he is scheduled for this Tuesday. Sadly he has been seeing a different hemonc who has let his counts slowly go down and he is at 153 today...a good count, but if he goes below 150 the dentist will not do the work...nor will the hemonc allow it. We might have to reschedule  But he's been in alot of pain this year because of it, and he has had to take some hydrocondone at times, and mostly just tylenol cause I don't want him becoming addicted to narcs. Its better not to get that extraction with such low counts cause she will bleed and bleed afterward. You need to get the counts up first. In the meantime ask for some pain meds.

This isn't the same situation, but when my son first got ITP last year his baby molars were all coming out because the adult ones were coming up underneath them. He had a count of around 10K at the time and no real problems - a bit of bleeding but nothing much. Baby teeth don't have a lot of root. Also, I seem to remember reading something on here about stopping bleeding by biting down on a damp teabag? - don't know why this would work other than being a good way to apply pressure though.

Best of luck, Alison

Caffeine is a vasoconstrictor so it would help to stop the bleeding, I would think.

The tea bag is what the oral surgeon told me to do many years ago when I kept bleeding after having my wisdom teeth extracted.

When my ITP kid was 13, her baby teeth had stubbornly refused to budge, and she needed braces. Eight teeth were to be extracted, and, of course, our dentist (a good friend) would not touch that due to the ITP and his location in a small town. Our hemonc knew a good pediatric dentist/oral surgeon at MCG, and it was done in the OR with hemorrhage control measures on hand and our hemonc's office just a crosswalk away. One tooth fell out days before the procedure, so we were down to seven. She was on pred for five days before and five days after the procedure, and the dentist used HemCon oral dressings packed into the holes. These were new at the time. The product was developed for soldiers surving in Iraq. Some fell out right away, and the dentist attributed that to his first time use of a new product. The count had risen from the teens to 94 in time for the procedure, and that number was okay with our guys. She had little residual bleeding even on the first day. She also was told to bite on a tea bag if there was any ooze. It's really not bad. If the tea bag is wrapped in a thin piece of gauze, the tea leaves don't get out in the mouth, and you squeeze the excess liquid from the boiled and cooled tea bag, so there's not bitter unsweet tea going everywhere. Little taste, really, and not unpleasant. My kid was also prescribed two types of mouthwash. One is the "magic mouthwash" antifungal, etc., given to chemo patients. Can't remember the other. Not sure they'd prescribe that for such a young child as yours, and not sure one baby tooth would merit putting her through it. Obviously, soft foods are the rule for a few days after, so stock up on pudding (custard) cups and favorite soups. Good luck.
