Bone Marrow Test was created by Lmaher
Hi All,

My son is coming up on the 6th month & he's platelets have never gone above 13. He is in great form & no active bleeding so we are very lucky. So far all is going well but the Doctor said that he will probably have to go for a bone marrow test in Jan. He explained the test to me so from what I understand we need the test to come back normal & then we can take it from there with treatment.

Just looking for some information on how he will feel after the test & will it be painful for him. They told me he will be sediated but I have heard from people its very painful but these are people who never had experience of it so just wondering if anyone can let me know how he should be feeling.

Thanks
Linda

My son had it done, he was too young to tell us if anything hurt by words, but he didn't complain or show any pain after. During it I did not go in, daddy did, but they must of done a good job sedating him because he didn't move or anything. He came out totally fine never complained it hurt, and it healed really fast.

Good luck, for us I didn't want it done but it was such a relief knowing there was nothing hidden that hadn't showed up in blood yet.

Thanks for that. I'm the same would prefer if its something he didnt have to go through but know that he needs it to make sure all is ok there.

I did'nt think about going in with him either so at least I know that as well & can prepare myself.

My son is 13 and had his bone marrow test done in August. It was done under local aneasthesia. Aside from the initial jabs for the aneasthesia, he only felt a cool sucking sensation in his thigh (his was administered from the hip). He was brave and did not complain of anything. The tests turned out normal, but he is now in his sixth month of this dreadful experience.
Our Hemat says we may think of doing the test again. I know why he wants it retaken, but am very uncomfortable with the consequences.

I'm an adult who has had the bone marrow biopsy. I was fully awake and had it done in the doctors office with a local numbing injection. It really isn't that bad. Twenty minutes and it was all over. I left with a band-aid.

My hip was sore for about a week, but not bad enough to stop me from working or doing normal things.

They show it on TV with people screaming and thrashing around. That is pretty dramatic....not quite like that. If your son is being sedated, he'll do fine.
