I'm actually wondering the same. I've been debating. Honestly, I thought we'd be over ITP by now (wishful thinking... I know) so I was holding off. I think I'm going to just go buy one already. Do they have ones for ITP? Or do they have a general one? I'm not even sure what to get!

Dawn, I think that sounds like a wonderful idea!! My little man just turned 2 so not sure what i could get him to keep on, my thinking at first was we would always be with him, than one day I thought what if we were in an accident and I was unable to tell them..?? Anyway I think that sounds like a terrific idea :)

Most people have the words "Low platelets" placed on the bracelets. Believe it or not, not all paramedics and nurses know what "ITP" is. We've had members here quiz them and some did not know.

Dougie has a couple of sports type wristbands, but refuses to wear them. The doctor advised putting the word "very" in front of low platelets if the figure was generally below 30. When we were last in A&E for an injury, the triage nurse didn't have a clue what I was talking about when I said he had ITP.

I think these are important for persons with low counts. Julianne has one, but hasn't worn it since remission. I knew that many first responders and even ER folks didn't know about ITP, so hers says "Bleeding disorder - low platelets - ITP." You can get cute ones that look like jewelry and also sensible nylon/velcro wriststraps that are washable and good for sports at www.laurenshope.com . I'm not hawking their website. We just found the best selection there. Julianne was active in sports when possible while we were dealing with ITP, and all sports have limits on jewelry, yet she needed it most when doing that. So, the nylon was our choice. (She also wasn't yet quite the princess she is now at 18.)

More times than not, I have to explain what ITP is to whichever nurse I am speaking to at his pediatric office. I was surprised when I was speaking to his dentist (canceling his check up) and he knew exactly what I was talking about!

I was wondering what I could get on there to signal ITP. And now that you mention it, "low platelets" seems so obvious that I feel silly for not thinking of that!

Thanks for the tips :)

My son's school (age 11) required him to wear a bracelet. We simply included low platelet count, recent treatment (because of his suppressed immunity) and physicians number ( they would have all the information to relay to EMS or whoever. Glad we did it a peace of mind wondering if I would miss a call to give instructions and a peace of mind for the school.
