Occult blood

Tim's been having some stomach pain today so I took him in to the hemonc (the office anyway). They did a cbc and he was 17k so up a little but not really much. As they always tell us when they drop by a few thousand, its not enough to mean anything. But they were happy about it. They found occult blood in his stool, and mentioned pancreatitus and sent him home until his appointment tuesday...no scans. This is not the best place for him, though everyone seems to think it is. His doctor never even sees him. Its like getting distance treatment over the computer.

I had acute pancreatitis and is NOT fun - It started out feeling like mild indigestion, but then it got worse and turned into a severe burning/aching pain, spreading from my abdomen up to my neck. I had sone internal bleeding, too. It was long ago, and I don't remember how it's diagnosed, but it put me in the hospital and took forever to get the inflamation down.

OK, I had to google that one - I initially thought that maybe Tim was involved in some bizarre witchcraft ritual or something!

You must be very worried, given his counts at the moment. I really hope that they get him sorted out and quick.

You're funny Ali. Occult simply means hidden, lol. It took me a minute to figure out what you were talking about haha. I'm not horribly worried, but starting to wonder what the future is going to be like if we can't get his counts up.

Maybe its a cultural thing - in the UK, occult generally refers to witchcraft etc. Or maybe I am just ignorant..... I saw the title, and thought of goblets of sacrificial blood or something! :P

I really feel for Tim, because it must feel like a step backwards. Dougie is going through the same thing but on a much smaller scale - he normally ignores ITP, but he has a lot of bruising the last few weeks, so he can't and its really knocked him again.

Good luck in getting it sorted out anyway

In the US, the most common meaning of occult is the witchcraft one, and most people would think that too, but the second meaning is like lucidawn said, hidden, and is usually used in medical contexts.

As Donna says it's a medical term. It's used that way in the UK too.

Ali, I'd like to meet the person who comes up with a test for "goblets of sacrifical blood" in a person's stool! We could have the salem witch trials all over again! Oh, wait, those were bad huh...never mind.

Being around chronic, life threatening health problems day in and day out, we all get a little paranoid (medically). My 17 year old was convinced last night that he had rye's syndrome. It was very hard not to laugh as he was trying to convince me to take him to the ER because within minutes of taking pepto bismol, he got an ear ache. He read the label, and well, now the paranoia, lol.

Poop to ITP. When I also read the title, I kept thinking, "yep, this blood disorder is some type of cult." HA! I'm such a dodo.

I hope your guy gets feeling better and his ear and everything else gets back to "normal" soon.

This is the stuff that drives me crazy
This is the stuff that's getting to me lately
In the middle of my littleness
I forget how big I am blessed
This is the stuff that gets under my skin
But I gotta trust You know exactly what you're doing
It might not be what I would choose
But this is the stuff...
