My 2 1/2 yr old son was diagnosed a month ago. His platelets this week were up to 131,000 YAY!
Today he got sick. He has a fever of 103.7 tonight. He doesnt talk much but was pointing to his belly saying ouch and has no other symptoms. the fever comes down with tylenol. I wil call his pediatrician in the morning. Just wondering if his platelets wil be dropping. Also he has never had a fever this high. Does ITP cause you to get higher fevers when sick?

Hi Jjiillee,

From my experience with my 3.5 year old, ITP doesn't appear to cause high fevers; both my kids - including the non-ITP one - have had fevers that high. From the reading I did about ITP there doesn't seem to be any connection between the two.

Again from my experience, viral infections can lower the platelet count significantly.

Tommy complains about stomach pain fairly regularly, he has had a few tests, but nothing came out of it. Some recent literature suggests that, in a few cases, H. Pilory (a stomach bacteria) may have something to do with ITP. This can be tested with a stool sample.

I'd certainly call your doctor if you're concerned.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

BTW: I wouldn't worry too much about a possible temporary drop in platelet counts. Certainly not when your kid is in bed being sick :-)

For Kayla, a viral infection will sometimes drop her and she will rebound on her own other times nothing will happen. As for the fever there really shouldn't be a correlation between ITP and the fever.
The tummy ache is probably just a sympton of the virus, with a count so high I wouldn't worry too to much, but I would be looking for any signs of a lower platelet count, including petichiae, bruising, blood in urine(due to tummy ache)
Hope he gets through this bug with high count. This roller coaster disorder sure does keep us on our toes:-)
