So....I'm 1500 miles from home, and I had a run-in with a flip chart. It's amazing how viscious they can be when they collaspe on you. So, after a couple of hours of pretending my hand was going to be fine, I decided to trot off to urgent care.

First off, two things that you DON'T want to hear from your urgent care doctor:

"wow, that's much worse than I thought it was going to be" and
"your tendon is exposed...see that white thing? that's your tendon"

and then the weirdest thing I think I've ever heard from a doctor, although maybe I'm just jaded these days...after he cut the skin further, had me wiggle my finger while he observed the tendon, made me sit for 45 minutes while he waited for a hand surgeon to call him back, and then gave me three stitches, he says:

"you did great!"

I said "thank you, you did great too, I think....I'll let you know".

:P

Ooooo I wouldn't want to see that white thing. I don't like them in chicken breasts and I wouldn't like them on me.

I love your answer - classic! Sorry you got hurt.

I was absolutely fine for almost 3 hours after the accident, then he pointed out my tendon and all of a sudden it was "cold sweat and I'm glad I'm sitting down" time. It just struck me as so odd that he felt he had to reassure me that I was an okay patient, like that was what I was concerned about!!

Another funny comment...the paramedic who cleaned my wound and got the stich equipment ready spent a bunch of time keeping me entertained (I think that was part of his job), and at one point I dropped the gauze I'd been holding on the wound, so I said "sorry, guess I'll need a new one of those" and he picked it up and said

"no, we follow the 10 second rule around here".

But he DID get a new one, right? My daughter works in an OR and complains all the time about how they re-use equipment. This is a big city hospital - one of the top 10 in the US. These are the things you don't want to know.

Yeah, the tendon comment would have made me woozy too.

Yep, he was just kidding. I got a new piece of guaze, and when I finally got bandaged up, he used both purple and pink coband, and gave me little roles of blue and purple so I could redo it after rebandaging. No spongebob squarepants bandage for the tetanus shot, though.

Sorry about your owie - hope it heals well! Why a tetanus booster - I had one in 2002, didn't you have one around then or after me?

No one is going to the proper authorities in that hospital?? That's a lawsuit waiting to happen [and your daughter could be on the receiving end], not to mention a sin - inexcusable!

I had a tetanus booster in 2003. Might've had one since, too, but I couldn't remember and my clinic didn't have it on record. If it's been over 5 years and you get a broken skin injury, they do a booster.

I turned down a tetanus booster, afraid it could affect my counts who knows. I figure the changes of count problems with it are greater than the chances of tetanus without it - but what are the chances of tetanus anyway? You never hear about anyone actually having it.

I love the line about the ten second rule, and I too would have gone clammy over my own tendon sticking out. My dentist sometimes tells me I did a good job and it makes me feel brave and proud and ten years old, but not in a bad way.

Melinda - she does what she is told. She's a tech. This isn't the first hospital she's been to and had that experience, which means it happens more than we want to know.

Yeah, I was thinking you had yours after mine - but I don't remember other than we both had a platelet drop.
