While posting to Polly I realized that next month (I think, could have been early May) it will be 25 years since my ITP diagnosis - amazing! I should get a prize or something, just not a crash ;)

Part of me wants to say Happy Anniversary but that just doesn't seem appropriate!

You deserve a prize!

For me on the other hand i'm at 17 years. I still keep hoping ITP will be gone before I hit 20 years!

April 1 is the tenth year since my hysterectomy. Which means, 10 years of ITP. Wow, Melinda, you're right; time really does fly!

When we stop to think about it....

I used to be able to say the exact date I finally went to the doctor looking like I had been beaten with a 2x4 in a back alley, but don't any more - remember everything else about that day though. Now I never can remember if it was April or May, think May because I was out of the hospital in time to host a party that had been planned for a couple months.

Think my present will be a driving trip to Yellowstone :)

Well, happy anniversary! :P

I can't remember the month I was diagnosed either, just know it was early spring of 1998. Not a date I care to remember. :S

I can't tell you the day or month I was diagnosed! But I sure can tell you the events of the 2 days when I first noticed myself covered in spots and the following day getting my diagnoses!

I used to be able to tell the month, now can't remember - but like you I can remember the events leading up to my going to the doctor with my new shades of skin [black & blue], that whole day and he didn't get the blood test results back until dinner time, the time in the hospital [yep, back then with a low count & no diagnosis it was the hospital], the blasted painful bone marrow biopsy, meeting my hematologist, starting prednisone, getting ready to move overseas.

Funny what we can and can't remember.

It's been 12 years for me.
I ignored it completely for the first year. It'll go away, no worries. Uh huh. Yeah, right.

Good for you for rolling right along MJ - I could have said no we aren't moving overseas a couple months after diagnosis, but I am so thankful I rolled right along and we moved!

No way could I have ignored ITP for a year, did it for a few months but had I ignored it everyone would have thought I was being beaten.

My NP found low platelets (in the 60s) during a routine annual exam in August 2001. She thought it was lab error and we re-did the CBC the following week....70s. So, I was off to see a hematologist.

I remember that one of 2 things happened on Sept 12, 2001 (the day after 9/11). Either I got my BMB or I got my BMB results. I know I was up the night of 9/11 with very confused feelings, bouncing back and forth between feeling scared of what the BMB would find, and lucky that I was only dealing with low platelets and wasn't in NYC.

I have a very clear memory of when Dougie was diagnosed too. It was summer half term and the week before he had been to France for 3-4 days with the school. When he came home he went out more or less straight away to a weekend scout camp. He came home on the sunday night and his friend also came to sleep over. Then we had a barbeque the next afternoon, no-one had had enough sleep, and I remember keeping telling him to take his sweatshirt off because it was really hot, but he wouldn't. Then I had to seperate him and his brother because they were fighting.........at which point he said that he was covered in bruises, and when I looked, lo, he was! I even remember the word games we played in the waiting room at the hospital (we waited AGES) because we didnt expect to be there long so hadnt taken anything to do. And asking the dr to write down the full spelling of ITP because I knew neither of us would remember the right name when we called his dad who was at home looking after the others
Its really weird how well I remember that weekend :P

Well yes, a plethora of bruises are part of the whole deal.
When people get overly curious about bruises, I simply tell them, "You should see the other guy". B)
