mandatory labeling for GMO's? was created by Bunnie
While diet changes haven't seem to be a contibuting factor to any changes to my counts, I've followed with interest Sandi's Palento diet discussion and others. I also am just finished reading the Virgin diet which suggests elimiating 7 common allergy/intolerance foods for 21 days and then reintroducing them one at a time to see impacts. However, two foods she suggest not be reintroduced are corn and soy, because they are GMO's.

So this week on facebook a friend posts this article
Regulators Discover a Hidden Viral Gene in Commercial GMO Crops
www.organicconsumers.org/articles/article_26930.cfm

Which made me think about the theories on Autoimmunity due to molecular mimicry
www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11984596

So then I'm poking around the links to links in the pages and I'm beginning to think we should join the movements for mandatory labeling genetically modified organisms(GMOs), so those who want to avoid them can.

Bunnie- the problem I'm having is that with a lot of the gluten free foods, soy is the substitute. I checked out the Chipotle site and their food is gluten free, but they use soy. I think soy is one of the worst products to ingest, but am finding it hard to avoid. You really have to read labels!

I couldn't understand the original article, so I did a google search to see if I could find anything in plain English. For better or worse, I found this:

@Sandi, I agree, I have a dairy allergy and for years have used Soy milk for coffee drinks and cooking where you have to have something. The almond milk is okay. Coconut milk leaves a lot to be desired in some cases. I can't lighten my coffee with it, but in a smoothie with frozen veg or fruits it's okay. Shopping at Whole Foods this weekend, I noticed that they have gone to a "GMO free" shelf tag for products that are. My favorite brand is Silk and according to the shelf lablel it's GMO free.

@Tamar, interesting article. I suspect this is one of the topics where there are passionate debates if your into the "natural" life style. And it's big business, so companies like Monsanto are going to spend big bucks for lobbyists to protect their interests. I'm not sure where I ultimately fall in the consumption space, but having it labeled lets everyone make their own decisions.

As many of you may know, Joan Young , the founder of PDSA has semi-retired to Arizona and leads our local support group. We met last week and I had mentioned this post. She passed it along to Caroline who found some additional links.

This French research, published in NIH database, indicated that they could not conclude that GM corn MON863 was a safe product.
www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17356802

This Italian research study, also in NIH database, concluded that in mice eating MON810 maize (corn) there were alterations in the percentage of T and B cells and of CD4(+), CD8(+), and other T cells in both weaning and older mice that lasted for 30 or 90 days. Results suggested peripheral immune response to GM crop ingestion.
