I'm pretty sure I know the answer to this question, but, does anyone know if people with ITP can be bone marrow donors? I'm thinking not. A friend of ours' grandson has leukemia and needs a bm transplant. He's only 19 and his mother died from it when he was 1. I wish I could be tested, but I probably wouldn't even come close to being a match. Our friend is raising both his grandsons (the youngest one has Autism) and he himself has health issues. They'll be spending a lot of time at the IWK (children's hospital in Nova Scotia).

For years, I was on the National Bone Marrow Transplant Donor list, but once I was diagnosed with ITP, I notified them and had my name taken off the list.

Please keep this family in your thoughts and prayers.

I'm sorry to hear about your friends grandson. I don't know about Bone Marrow, but it would seem that if we have a production problem or distruction antibody, you won't want to pass it on to some one who is already compromised. However a few years ago when there was some discussion that my sister might need stem cell transplant, I asked about it since she and I share a blood type and our sisters are not the same. The hemotologist didn't seem to think that ITP would be a factor. Fortunately, she's her condition has stabalized and we haven't had to pursue it.
