Double knee replacement planned was created by debbied
My surgery for double knee replacement is set for October 17. Platelets have been at 150,000 or higher. My ortho is suggesting banking my own blood for possible transfusion if necessary. Has anyone else done this? Any suggestions? Any input is appreciated, thanks.

Hi Debbie-I rarely come to this site, I am mostly on Facebook. I have had 3 knee replacements, none of them bilateral ones. It is a tough surgery, extra tough if you're doing 2 knees at once as you're left with no good leg to stand on, but you have only 1 rehab. I actually did bank my blood for the 2nd and 3rd surgeries and I did use the blood for my 3rd knee replacement when my platelets dropped between pre-op and surgery day. My hemo wanted a count of at least 75 and I was at 69 so it was done anyway, but with general rather than spinal, like the first two. My hemo was very glad that he could transfuse me with my own blood. I also did get a transfusion during and after the surgery of platelets, but those, as you may know, only offer a quick boost, long enough just to get through surgery. I would highly recommend you do the same.

Diagnosed with ITP 9/14/1980, the day oldest son was born, & it continued through the births of my other 2 sons and continues now! No treatments until March 2011 when I had a TKR and my count decided to plunge. Sons now almost 25-30. My spleen's still with me.
