Traveling to Stockholm - would love any advice

I'll be in Stockholm for business for two weeks later this month. I should have some time in the evenings and over one weekend for myself. Any tips would be welcome - things to do or not do, see or not see, travel advice.
Thanks! Kind of frazzled,
Erica

Hi Erica,
Here is a report about tourist attractions in Stockholm:
www.visitstockholm.com/en/to-do/attractions

It is quite difficult to know what you will prefer. I like nature and animals so I take friends to the open air museum Skansen. Try to go there a day when it isn’t raining.

Then we have the ship from the 1600s called Wasa. It is interesting if you like history.

If you have read Stieg Larsson’s fiction trilogy “Millenium” you could participate in a guided walking tour to see the places where the stories took place.

Since I am 72 yo I don’t know much about the night life in Stockholm though I have lived here my whole life.
Kind regards
Birgitta-A

Nothing to be frazzled about - just go and enjoy. To me the best thing is to get out and walk, see more things that way.

Erica,
How exciting, should be a great trip. Have the best time, I am guessing it is a work related trip but the weekends and nights should be enjoyable.

Birgitta,
Thank you so much for your reply. What a treasure and opportunity to be able to connect with people around the world like this. Can you tell me, are most tourist type activities especially outdoor ones like Skansen available in late October? Skansen sounds very interesting to me, I like nature and animals too. Some places in the US, especially in colder areas like New England, close down after September until the weather warms up again.
I have seen several Swedish movies lately, including the great vampire picture Let the Right One In, and it made me very interested in seeing this part of the world in person. What good fortune that my work is sending me there!

I did read the Millenium books and saw the movies too. I see there is a lot of coffee drinking in Sweden, and some very interesting sandwiches! I like how this book series describes the food and drink in a lot of detail - eating and drinking are my favorite parts of travel.

Hi Erica,
We have always found by talking to the locals you experience the 'real' thing. Perhaps your work colleagues or local cafe owners, for example, might suggest some places or things to do & see. Safe travelling & enjoy!

Hi Erica,
Skansen is open the whole year: www.skansen.se/artikel/visit-skansen-your-own-language

It is true that we drink a lot of coffee both when we are working and when we meet our friends. Here is info about the Millenium walking tour in Saturdays:
www.stadsmuseum.stockholm.se/museet.php?artikel=109&sprak=english

In the old town in the center of Stockholm you will find a lot of restaurants.

You asked about things to avoid. Tourists are often recommended a boat tour in the archipelago of Stockholm and I have heard many friens say that many of these tours are far to long. Most tourists find that after about 2 hours they think the tour is boring.

Unfortunately my disease - I have leukemia with very low platelets - makes me unable to meet you because I am so afraid of infections that I try to avoid places where people meet.

Hope you will have a nice time in Stockholm!
Kind regards
Birgitta-A
