Yes Milly you're right and I too hope that no one is affected by Hurricane Irene out in the States. I just hear about these things on British news and have no idea of the stress and uheavel in ones life that it cause. I cannot imagine being told to move away from the hurricane area. Where does one go, especially if they haven't anyone to put them up? How does it affect jobs etc and lifestyles at the time? All of which in UK we take for granted because we don't experience such events. We are badly done by when the snow stops us going to the shop half a day.... So we can't really begin to imagine what it must be like having to move then come back and start all over again...

So everyone is in my prayers and hope that Hurricane Irene blows itself out to sea and disperses there.

Hi, guys---Thought of more!

Non-electric can opener!

Water—2 gallons per person per day (drinking, cooking, washing). You may be without for days!!! Use a newly purchased trash can, fill with water! Bathtubs, too!

Weather radio-one of the big dangers with hurricanes is---tornadoes! Really!

If your windows break, you may lose your roof! No masking tape-use plywood!!! Tarps, nails, hammers, saws...

Gas up! Stations may be closed afterward! Park car: uphill, inside and/or no trees!

Chainsaw, work gloves, good shoes. This is a BIG storm—trees can take a few blows—but hours?? Ground’s already soaked… Chain saw injuries are awful and common after hurricanes.
But don’t trim trees now—what you cut will become projectiles!

Get cash—small bills! Credit may not be an option!

Fix a Flat—tire puncture repair

Bucket with lid (paint?) to use as latrine! Sorry!

Bake bread (frozen or homemade if none at store), desserts

Anything outside is a projectile. Bring in potted plants, lawn furniture (or sink in the pool—if you hyperchlorinate, they’ll sparkle when you take them out!)

You will lose electricity. Stock a cooler ahead of time with drinks, snacks, meds, foods that are to be eaten first, and you won’t have to open your frig very often. Eat frig food before freezer food.

Pets—use a kennel! Pets can get scared, lost! Plan for food, too!

BE PREPARED! Stay safe and stay inside!!!

Ann, Caitlin's Mom

Whew. I had one daughter in DC in the middle of the earthquake, and the other daughter on the NC coast when the hurricane was on the way. They are both safe. What a week of disasters!
