I have to have my 13 year old dog euthanized tomorrow, if she lives through the night. Very sad day.

Sorry Sandi, we went through that on July 6 last year.

It is very hard but it can be the best gift of love one can give their dear pet.

It's the hardest thing to do but you don't want them to suffer. If your anything like me my little dogs are like my children.

Sorry to hear that, Sandi, but you're probably doing what is best for him/her. Are you having him/her cremated and getting the ashes? We did with our cat, and probably will with our dog.

Our poor girl is so full of arthritis, that if she makes it through the summer, we'll be lucky.

Thanks, everyone. It's over. Hardest thing I ever did. My son and daughter were there too and we sat with her while she died.

I'm swinging between feeling peaceful with the decision and wanting to scream because I feel like I killed her. I went to work before and after and couldn't hold it together. Luckily, I have an office door.

She was so bad this morning that I couldn't stand the thought of her having to live like that another five hours until the appointment. I know I did the right thing, but it's haunting me.

Good it is over for both of you, but remember we go through the same mourning process regardless of if it is a friend, family member, or a loved pet.

May you find peace of mind, you did the right thing!

You didn't kill her. You made her inevitable passing easier for her, which is an act of love and grace.

Sorry.

I'm so sorry. Helping a pet in that way is an incredibly tough decision. It seems to make it a little easier that she was surrounded by those she loved, and it sounds like it was peaceful. Take care of yourself now.

You did what was best for her, Sandi. Yeah, it's hard. When we had Molly put to sleep, I cried for weeks, still do when I see pictures of her. Remember the good times you had with her. And remember, it does get easier.

I was talking to my son last night and told him that I felt like I betrayed Shelby because I made the decisions and the appointment. He said he felt the exact same way because he carried her in. We both feel guilty. I told him to carry her, so he was only doing what I asked him to do. I hope it gets easier.

I'm so sorry, I know the feeling of losing a beloved family pet. My dog Muffin was a multese terrior and they aren't supposed to live long, but he lived till he was 15 and we got him when he was a puppy. He was old and had athritis and was losing his hearing and he was accidently run over by my mum cause he didn't hear the car come down the drive and couldn't move fast enough to get out of the way when he did realise. That may have been a blessing in disguise though cause we were also starting to think about having him put down. It is a very sad feeling and its not any less painful then losing a human family member cause pets are your family too.

Please don't feel guilty, i'm sure Shelby is no longer in pain and is in a much better place now xoxox

Sandy, I'm sorry for your loss, too. I know how you feel. We also had to put our beloved Yohannis (German Sheppard) down 1 1/2 weeks ago. He was 11 years old and had been sick for two years. I feel like I lost a part of my life. He use to look like a little teddy bear--not the typical German Sheppard. And, he was the sweetest dog. You did the right thing. I know our dog was just suffering and he didn't want to let go because he loved us all.

Reading these posts brought back what I went through a little over a year ago, with my 14 year old cocker spaniel. He was my BESTEST friend, and the day I had to make that terrible decision was one of the hardest days ever. Someone sent me this poem at that time, and I remember it brought me comfort, so I thought I'd share.
So sorry for your loss Sandi.

RAINBOW BRIDGE

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies who has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; his eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Kimm, That's a beautiful poem. It makes tears come to my eyes when I think of our beloveth Yohannis. We have one dog left--and he is a sweetheart, too. I keep saying I am not going to get another pet--because it is sooo hard when you have to put them down.

Thanks for sharing the poem with us:)

Thanks for all of the kind words. It's getting a little easier.

We had a Memorial on Saturday and it was great! The whole family was here and we passed her collar around and told Shelby stories. Some were funny, some were sad, we were laughing and crying. I found some old videos from when she was young and we watched those - playing with my son in the snow, Christmas morning with her stocking, and it really helped. I was only focusing on the past few days and had forgotten that she'd had a long, happy life. She was always smiling!

When I think of all the pets that we have had (mostly dogs), it all ties in together with my kids growing up. There was a pet along each phase of their growing up periods (sometimes more than one :)).

Hi Sandi
I am so sorry for your loss. Our pets are so dependent and loyal and they are in many ways young children for all of their life with us.
Recently my beautiful kitty Elsa needed to move on because of tumers throughout her lungs and digestive track. She was so very brave isn her last days, and remained playful and responsive until the day she clearly told me she was scared and could fight no more.
I only ask that she be happy in her next life, and I really hope that we will be joined again,
In many ways, the loss of our loved furry children triggers all other losses. I know how you must be aching, and I really hope you find a source of comfort.
Jean
