Haven't been here in ages!! was created by Caroline109
My link here disappeared and I forgot to find it again until now! Been an exciting few months or more since I was last here. I had yet another knee replaced (actually I had my first knee done, the partial knee replacement, revised to a total knee replacement) 7 weeks ago. AFter years of no problems with my ITP, I arrived at the hospital with a count of 69,000, almost 40,000 less than the week before at my pre-op. I had the surgery anyway, anesthesia switched from spinal (which I had had done before) to general anesthesia and a platelet transfusion thrown in there. My platelets dropped to 42,000 the next day. My hematologist, whose office is in the hospital, visited, put me on prednisone (which I hadn't had in years and years-the last time for my ITP in 1986 when I was pregnant and once since then for poison ivy) which upped it nicely to the 60s and eventually over 100,000 while still in the hospital. I also got a platelet transfusion and my autologous blood (what I donated before surgery for myself in case I needed it) while there. I had heart racing due to a potassium deficiency-fixed with medication and a horrible IV infusion of it). Since the surgery, my count went up to over 200,000 and I tapered off the prednisone very quickly, maybe 10 days total of taking it. I had finally gotten my hematologist to let me come in every 3 instead of 4 months for a check in but this whole thing now has me going in monthly. Hoping in a few months, he will let me go back to every 3 or 4 months. Meanwhile, my count is going back to its normal levels slowly, currently at 98,000. I was very happy that I had a good reaction to the prednisone without much problems with side effects. Since I was recovering from major surgery, it actually was slightly beneficial, especially in reducing arthitic pains in the joints I didn't have replaced (since I have arthritis there too, and had to be off my Nsaid=-which I am back on now, with permission from my hemo.).
So that's my saga! Hoping everyone has being doing well here. I am on Facebook=was a friend to the PDSA there but my account got hacked about 3 weeks ago and I had to start a new account so I need to refriend it:) See you there perhaps!

Welcome back, Caroline! Good to hear from you.

In my sister's place, when she finally got back on Face Book, she had a message from them stating that someone had hacked into her account and told her from where; New York of all places since we're in Canada. But I think all she had to do was set a new password.

I found out I was hacked when someone I know mentioned about a newspaper article I posted about a shooting near her and I hadn't posted it! I didn't want to take any chances about the hacking so I deactivated that first account and started with a new one. When I went back to the pdsa page there last night, I discovered I had already befriended it (hadn't remembered), lol.
Hoping this will be the last time I have a platelet issue. Of all the times for it to have shown up again, it was not a good time! I was shocked to say the least. But, as I said, I was very happy that the prednisone did what it needed to do especially since the last time I had it for the ITP, in 1986 when I was pregnant with my 3rd son, I remember my high risk OB GYN telling me I seemed more resistant to the prednisone than I had when I was pregnant with my 2nd son! I guess time improved that, lol!
