Please send your thoughts and prayers to my mother who had a massive stroke early Saturday morning. She is in the hospital and is likely to be there for a while. Her speech is severely affected as is her left arm. Of course, it being the Easter weekend, none of the folks who do the assessments were working, so nothing will be done until tomorrow.

Glad everyone had a great Easter!

Thanks, Sandi, I have good moments (and bad) and just was sitting here thinking about some of our conversations and realized that may all change. Having a bad moment right now. I am so used to calling her at night and it felt really weird not to last night.

We had my parents here for dinner on Friday and there was no indication that there was anything wrong. The good thing is, there was no bleeding on the brain when they did the CT. She is getting blood thinners as far as I know. My Dad is a little hard of hearing and doesn't get what people are saying a lot of time at the best of times. If mum's speech doesn't get better, he's going to have a hard time understanding her.

Still can't believe it happened. She is a big woman and in some ways this shouldn't be that much of a surprise.

Had a nice visit with Mum last night. Her mind still seems to be sharp and she can answer questions. As long as the answers aren't too long, her speech isn't bad. We should find out more today once she gets assessed. She'll be 83 in July. She's already told the doctor she wants to go home! But then, she's been saying that since Sunday!

It's just really hard to see her lying in that bed not being able to move without help. Going back up with my Dad this afternoon and then Steven will pick me up when he gets off work. Had a great sleep last night for the first time since Saturday.

Thanks for all the good thoughts. They are much appreciated!

What a difference a week and two days can make. Mom is doing a lot better. She can sort of stand up (with help) oh her feet. She is still very weak on the left side, and her arm still won't work. She has a wheelchair now, too. Hoping we can get her out and about the hospital in it. Still on pureed food, which she hates, but at least she is eating.

I am feeling a lot better for seeing her improve and so glad to have her still with us!

Thanks for all the good thoughts, and please keep them coming!

Thanks, Sandi! Yeah, it's great news! We're so happy. I'm still seeing some damages from the stroke, but at least she is still with us. We know it's still going to be a long slow process, but we're ready.

Well, got some good news and some not so good news yesterday. Mum is off the pureed food and on to minced food, like real mashed potatoes and can have regular drinks.

However, the not so great news is, at my doctor's appt, who is also my parents' dr., I asked him how he thought she was doing. He said she is doing good, but doesn't think she'll regain the use of her left arm. I wasn't expecting to hear that. :( He said, the main thing is to get her up and walking more. I agree there! The last two days that I've been there, she hasn't wanted to get out of bed. Hopefully today, she'll be up out of bed!

Cindy - your doctor may well be right, but no one can predict the recovery of a stroke patient.

I hope she gets out of bed too! She needs a coach and a cheer leader!

I'm an occupational therapist and have worked with people who have had strokes. Even if she does not get full use of her left arm back she should be able to do everything she needs/wants to do. A combination of using adaptive equipment and learning different ways to do things wll help. It is common for people to get down or depressed after a stroke so you can do alot toward keeping her spirits up. Hope you can get her up today!

So far, that's one thing I can say about Mum is that she hasn't gotten depressed. She'd like to see us all go out for a nice dinner when she gets out of the hospital.

She was pretty sleepy last night when Steven and I went up to see her; but that's probably because she hadn't been out of bed all day. She didn't want to get up. The rehab guys will have her up today, I bet!

More good news; she moved her thumb on the paralyzed hand the other day. She doesn't remember doing it, but the nurse saw it. When the nurse asked her to squeeze her hand, she couldn't. But it's starting to move, that's the main thing!

Mom walked 30m yesterday with a walker and her two rehab guys on either side of her! She said it scared her, but after being in bed for a month, that doesn't surprise me. My only concern with the walker is, how safe it is since her left arm is still useless and she can't hold on to it.

Dad says she walked yesterday too and did pretty good.

She finally has been moved to the rehab floor! Not impressed with the nursing staff there. She waited 20 minutes to go pee, and even then I had to go to the desk and remind them she had rung. Then, when they did come in to take her, one of the nurse's said, "I forgot we put her in the wheelchair. hehe" And she couldn't remember putting the seat belt on her! Duh! I hope she has better nurses today! She had a bit of a panic attack when my dad left yesterday. We figure it was just the move to a new floor and new routine. She'll have to go to the dining room for her meals on this floor, but I think that's a good thing.

I hope she gets on regular food soon; doing up her meals for the week was hard. She didn't want much of what was on the menus. There's at least two days that she didn't order any lunch but asked me to make her a ham sandwich. Dad has to make one on the other day. I just have to remember what day that is! I think it's Friday.

Just reading this post now. Sorry to hear sounds like she is doing pretty good. Recovery can take quite a while. And like someone said on another post attitude is everything.

Sending a big internet hug your way! Don't forget to take time for yourself. People tend to ignore themselves in this type of situation and that is not good! So do for your mom as well as yourself ok!!

Mum continues to do well with her rehab. She is working really hard on her arm which is starting to work again. She is walking with a walker in the gym with assistance. Her speech comes and goes; when she's tired, it's really hard to understand her. A doctor was in her room yesterday when Steven and I got there and he was saying they generally give stroke patients a 6 month recovery time line. It could be longer or it could be shorter. He said not everyone totally recovers and some do. We just take her recovery one day at a time.
