Hi
I would like to hear about anyone's experience with getting an IUD.
I am concerned with the reports of longer heavier periods

I had an IUD and my periods have really tapered off. The ironic thing about me getting an IUD was that I had a blood clot and had to come off the pill. Imagine, a blood clot even with low platelets! I don't even think about my IUD, though I will need it changed after 5 years.

Farmgirl, have you been tested for APS which causes clotting and sometimes goes along with ITP?

I have an IUD - got it long before ITP diagnosis and in fact, I recently spoke to an OBGYN about whether or not I will be eligible to get another one in a few months when mine will need to be replaced.
There is a risk of perforation of the uterus during insertion and I was concerned that if my platelets remain low, the MD's will not allow me to get another one due to risk of bleeding.
But, thankfully, I was informed that IUD's are recommended for lessening periods, which is a good thing for ITP patients - and I will have no problem getting another one when I need it. (even if the platelets are still low)

There are two types of IUD's. The copper one is said to make your periods worse but it lasts ten years and there are no hormones involved.
The Mirena is hormone-based, lightens your period, but lasts five years. The Mirena is said to make PMS symptoms worse - even though you don't really get a period. That's kind of strange.

I have the Mirena and love it.

Wow, a topic on here that I know about! I feel like Sandi! hehe, Hi Sandi! :cheer:
